A bad ending can really hurt an otherwise great movie (Fury - spoilers)

So I just watched Fury this past week. I had been wanting to see it, and I wish I had seen it in theaters. Anyway, it was awesome and intense up until the scene with the SS battalion. It was entertaining enough, if a bit Hollywood, but then the end when the SS soldier looks under the tank and lets the kid live. It doesn't fit with the rest of the movie at all. None of the scene really but maybe that's just because that last little part was so weird and out of place. I've been wondering what would've been a better ending. Maybe the SS soldier sees him and just puts a bullet in his head and credits roll with the overhead shot of the tank and SS soldiers marching on by or something. But maybe there's a better option out there. How do y'all think it should've ended?

Summary: SS soldier lets kid live after an intensely brutal hour and a half, which completely deflates the mood of the movie. Better ending ideas?

The German soldier sees him and shouts out to the rest of the squad then it cuts to the kid under the tank reacting. Cuts to black. The end.

It wasn't bad but no where near great.

Maybe it's the ending that brings it down for you. Or maybe you just didn't like it altogether, whatever, that's fine. I personally was very into it until the end, which is what this thread is about.

That part didn't bother me so much. Brad Pitt's haircut bothered me more than anything in that movie

I wanted to like this movie but didn't. It mostly fell apart for me in the dinner scene. It felt like they were trying to give the characters some humanity that they never really earned. Like the scene in Saving Private Ryan when Hanks was taking about being a teacher. That felt real, Fury felt cheap to me.
