From The Goonies to Back to the Future to The Breakfast Club, directors like Steven Spielberg and John Hughes made innovative, intelligent pictures that respected their viewership.

Spielberg did not direct The Goonies

Yep. As a gen-x'er I feel fortunate to have grown up in the 80's. Music and movies were vastly superior to today. Plus our heads weren't buried in a phone and facebook 24/7.

I don't agree with that. Especially since I've never cared for Breakfast Club type movies then or now.

I always thought Heathers satirizing those John Hughes movies was better than the John Hughes movies themselves.

children of the 70s thought the music of the following generations sucked just like the children of the 60s, 50s, 40s, etc before them.

hell, people that grew up in the late Baroque era thought the Classical that followed was shite too.

Who is this Beethoven rapscallion? He'll never approach the greatness that is Vivaldi!

There have been other great years for younger audiences but the late 80's were pretty lacking when it came to great at least somewhat kid-friendly films. The best films in 1987 and 1988 were mostly rated R. 1989 was the notable exception since you had films like Batman, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and the Little Mermaid.
