So I just went and watched this movie with a friend who wanted to see it. I had not watched any previews so I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into. In the opening scene the girl is looking out over the River at a bridge. I immediately think to myself, "Is she in downtown Baton Rouge?" Well, I don't think I ever found out if that's where the movie started, but she leaves and drives over the bridge to leave town. The rest of the story ends up taking place in St. Charles according to John Goodman, who is a lead character. This movie ended up taking several turns that I totally did not expect. It's suspenseful but not scary. Not really. I mean a couple of times I gasped and covered my eyes, but other than that, it was fairly safe of gore/too much violence. Lot's of Louisiana references in this movie. I thought I saw a Creole Creamery ice cream thing in one scene. John Goodman is really good in this movie. I continuously went back and forth between "is he crazy or not". You'll see what I mean. I really enjoyed not knowing where this movie was going and trying to figure out who is telling the truth/what's real. So you should not watch the previews or read anything about it, otherwise it would make it less fun. I'd give this movie 3 stars!!

It's probably the only movie worth seeing right now other than Deadpool and Zootopia

Finally saw it yesterday. Solid suspense thriller. A lot of times the whole "Is _______ character good or bad" is poorly done and surprisingly predictable. Not the case here. John Goodman was fantastic, and it was really nice to see him as the leading man in this one. His character Howard was very tough to get a read on throughout. Mary Elizabeth Winstead was solid, and John Gallagher Jr was decent. An impressive achievement for a fairly small budget (15 million) film. If you're headed to the theater, please consider giving your money to 10 Cloverfield Lane instead of Batman vs Superman or the other subpar movies out right now.

Just watched it. It started in New Orleans, (not Baton Rouge), it was Lake Charles (not St. Charles) and NO Ice Cream Co. (not Creole Creamery), just for the record.

I thought it was a very suspensful and well-acted thriller. It also didn't look like a video game or contain scenes that only make sense in the context of future movies that I might not see. So that was nice. 7/10

If she didn't get stuck in traffic then it wasn't BR

John Goodman is so underrated. But yeah this movie was super intense. Really well done top to bottom, and it kept me uncomfortable the whole time. I enjoyed it.

Maybe I missed it or just didn't catch it but was there a daughter named Megan? If not, why did Howard lie to Michelle and Emmett about the names? Why didn't he just tell the same story? Did he dispose of Brittany's body in the acid? He said it decomposed them down to the bone...so where were Brittany's bones? Were her bones what were lodging the Air Filter Door closed?

Good movie overall....really enjoyed the suspense of them being in the shelter...kind of went to crap with the whole Alien thing. I understand that's the Cloverfield movie genre. Just thought the whole movie was really good and suspenseful and then BAM last 10 minutes this super tangent to the left just to suffice the Alien part.

for me personally, this is the type of shite i love. its very twilight zone. i thought it was very well done and the twist did not take me out of the story, only added to it. thoroughly enjoyed the whole movie.

This. I just watched it. Excellent movie that puts batman vs superman on the ground. The aliens could've been done better

It makes more sense in the context of the movie's production issues. The whole film production was almost shut down before JJ Abrams came in and did rewrites and pitched it as a loose tie-in to the Cloverfield franchise. Early leaks of the script are almost the same but without the last ten minutes of alien bollocks.

Just fyi

Well that makes complete sense now. Felt like two completely different films.

This was supposed to be a no spoilers thread, but that appears to have gone away. I'll still throw a warning out, though.

SPOILERS

How did it feel like two completely different films? The aliens were a major part of the plot. That's why they're in the bunker.

The aliens aren't why it felt like two films. The pacing and feel of the film completely shifted from a tense thriller to an action movie.

Heres a question to everyone: if the movie stayed the same but the title did not contain the word "cloverfield" and we did not know about JJ Abrams or any other cloverfield connection, would people have been more receptive to the twist?

This scenario takes the film as it is, not how the original script was. I loved the twist as ive said before. very twilight zone-ish and worked great for me. i feel like a lot of backlash is coming from public perception of Cloverfield and knowing it was a different movie to start.

Basically, would there be less negativity if this movie stood on its own, aliens and all?
