Zephyrs Affiliation

Clearly the Z's best times in the city came when they were the AAA team for the Astros. Not only was the team good, but with the local presence of many Astros fans, there was a big following of the minor league team.
I know when the Round Rock franchise went AAA, we lost the Astros to them I and I can understand why they wanted to be closer to the parent team, plus Nolan Ryan's involvement with the team.
Having said that, It's been 6 years since the Astros have been with Round Rock. Does anyone know if there has been any movement to get the team realigned with the Astros? Just seems like ever since they went with Miami, it's been a struggle for the Z's. With the new name coming in 2017, would be a great time for a new affiliation as well.

Not happening. Unfortunately they just signed a new agreement with Miami thru 2020.

I've seen speculation about the Astros possibly getting Round Rock back when their deal with the Rangers is up.

I've heard that too, especially in conjunction with a pair of possible relocations.
The rumor is that San Antonio (which currently has a AA franchise) plans to build a new ballpark which could host a AAA franchise. Then, the Colorado Springs franchise (which ranks among the worst in terms of attendance) will relocate to San Antonio, and the San Antonio AA franchise will relocate to Amarillo.

I'm surprised it isn't NOLA.

Some attendance numbers:
Last year, the Zephyrs were 14th out of 16 teams in the PCL in attendance. The Zephyrs averaged 4,710. The two teams below them were Colorado Springs (4,619) and Memphis (4,037). Sacramento led the league with an average of 9,338.
A new ownership and management group took over the team after last season. One of the new guys had this to say in November:
Well apparently the fans aren't even coming once. As of today, the Zephyrs are dead last in PCL attendance with an average of just 2,531 fans per game down almost 2,200 from last year. The next worst team this year is Colorado Springs at 3,899.
The Zephyrs, or whatever the hell they will call themselves, are locked in til 2020, but whatever the new management team is doing to increase attendance is failing miserably.

"New Orleans will be in the top tier of attendance, because this is a great town. This is a resilient town. This is a magical town. ... I can promise you this ballpark will come alive. We will provide first class family entertainment where families can come out with their kids, where grandparents can bring their grandkids to their first game, where young couples can go on their first date. It'll be a family place. We only ask the fans in New Orleans one thing: just come once. Let us earn your trust one time and I promise you'll be back."

Changing the name won't help attendance either, especially with those names.

Wow, that was last week. Four years... eh.

Not that I saw a lot of marketing the last few seasons, but I have seen absolutely nothing in terms of marketing for this season. The team is actually not awful this year.
The new ownership group may be getting their feet wet. They may be holding off on marketing until the awful new team name is revealed, with I'm assuming a new mascot and a new marketing plan.
Also, I'm surprised Memphis was so low last year. Goes to show you need more than a nice ballpark and location to attract fans.

Perhaps. The good thing is that there isn't "pressure" to get fans in the stands like there is at the major league level and they can take their time. Any money they make off of attendance is lagniappe in the grand scheme of things...though I am sure the local owners would like to have some money flowing through.
Being attached to the Marlins is what has killed the allure of minor league baseball in NO to me, and likely a lot of locals. If they were still affiliated with the Astros, I can guarantee that I would make the drive from BR 5-6 times a year and catch a game, and I know several people who would do the same. As it is, I have been to 1 game in the last 10 years.
And they are about to strike out with the new team name. The "least offensive" of the semifinalists is "Night Owls". I could live with that, but it is borderline stupid. I hope the marketing gurus are ready to handle whatever they pull out of the dumpster fire that was the "renaming campaign".

That surprised me as well. I thought that was a hotbed for Cardinal fans, who we all know are the greatest fans in baseball

The Z's aren't changing their name. It's a publicity stunt in which people who voted turned in email addresses. They'll use this negative response to the names and say they're keeping the Z's name all along.
