lower price tag than I expected.

Same. People were throwing out 50, surprised it was only 30 after all the hype

Moncada gets a 30 mill contract but Red Sox get dinged for another 30 on tax rate. 60 million for a 19 year old is a hefty price tag.

Still expected 40 minimum. At that rate I'm kind of surprised he didn't threaten to wait until July 2 to let the cubs and rangers gwt into the mix.

I expected more too. I don't really understand why the Red Sox have to pay $60MM for a $30MM agreement, though.
It was pie in the sky for the Cubs to sign Moncada, but I'm pretty sure they'll open up the checkbook on July 2 during the next signing period.

Looks like 63 on the 31.5 million contract. Really a no brainer for Red Sox to go that high, they were already going to be dinged in the next 2 international signing periods, so why not open it up for a talent like Moncada.

Is this kid expected to be major league ready this season?

He's a year maybe two away. He's only 19. Plus the Sox don't really have a reason to rush him. I can see them giving Nap another year or two at first, then bring Moncada up to play third, move Panda to first and let Nap walk.

Remember last year people were throwing out 100+ for Rusney. It's not all that suprising given he's probably going to see at least a year in the minors. People are just throwing numbers out there to drive up the actual market.
The Red Sox have an abundance of young talent. You've got to wonder now if they make a serious push for Hamels.

American players have to be pissed about this. Come out of highschool (or college) as the #1 pick have a slot value that teams really can't go over too much and this kid gets 3x that amount.
Just another arrow in the "world draft" quiver.

Not at all...i remember the speculation being more towards 50 million. But most of that was from the side of people who don't think he's a "impact bat."
Moncada has much more upside. I'm surprised it didn't eclipse 40.

There were definitely 100+ million dollar rumors put out there as well. I also think it's such a big difference in Castillo and Moncada's contract due to the fact one is still a prospect and one was technically MLB ready. It's pretty crazy to pay a guy a boat load of money to sit in the minors for a couple of years... which is likely.
Most projections had Moncada 30-40 from what I've seen. I think Yankees was second highest at 27 or something like that. It's safe to say people fell suspect to the media inflated projections again.

I'm sure there were, but I just looked it up and gammons and morosi had 50 to 70 million, not saying there weren't others that had 100 million, I just never saw them. And I can't understand how the only getting older yankees didn't go over that...after all, it's only money.

if he does that then yea, it makes sense. of course i've not scouted the guy and even if i had it wouldn't mean anything because i'm just another meatball fan screaming from the bleachers, but my limited following of it seemed to indicate he would only be in the minors for a year. Good on the redsox. To me it looks like a good deal for them.
You know there were all those rumors that the padres made a serious offer...if 30 is winning it, i get the feeling more and more that was a cubs/tanaka type offer. Sure it was competitive, but was never going to win and they knew that so might as well get your mileage out of an already impressive offseason for them.
