On TV, the announcers' responsibility is to connect you to this event as if you're there. This is my shortest answer, I could sperg out for 3 hours on this topic
As I disagree with how well they do this, I'd be interested in hearing more. Interesting take though.
It does make me wonder...you in broadcasting?

No, I always wanted to be one, but it's a low paying business and only a small percentage o people reach the top of their profession
For every Howard stern or rush limbaugh, there is a million morning zoo DJs who work incredibly long hours (not a problem for me) an move frequently for peanuts or some intern who never moves on.
As far as sports broadcasting is concerned, I only watch NFL and CFB and ill admit that guys like Verne and Gary are disingenuous or annoying, they are do the most part excellent at what they do. You're not in the stadium so you are oblivious to the atmosphere, tension, etc...even though you're watching. Why do we have PA guys at games? I can see what's happening. A live event doesn't require as many bells and whistles (a play by play and color being the biggest one you can have) but for home viewing they add positively to the experience. Now, I am talking strictly play by play and color. The Chris Bermans and Tom Jacksons bring nothing to the table during the halftime broadcast. I'd rather listen to the guys in the booth discuss the first half, replays, etc...

See...I tend to agree with this but I don;t think they give an impression of what it's like either. How many times have you been at a game and recorded it...and then went back and watched it and it felt like a different game based largely on the announcer's take on what was happening? I think that removing them, at least for me, would be the next best thing to being there...though admittedly it would not be the same.

Because not everyone can. In Tiger Stadium I sit in the EU. I love my seats and they give me a wonderful view of the entire field. Thankfully, I have great vision and can see numbers easily...but there are many occasions I end up telling folks around me who made a tackle or carried the ball. PA announcers fill that hole for most people.

I think this is where you and I disagree. For me, they bring virtually nothing to the table. I don;t need any bells and whistles to enjoy the game. I'm watching it to see the game being played, and that will be the same whether an announcer is telling me things or not. I find them to be in the way more often than they are helpful or informative. Your mileage clearly varies.
Anyway...thanks for the discussion. Interesting.

No that would be terrible. Broadcasters don't get enough respect...mike tirico, I'm looking at you.
Dude, there are some good sportscasters and there are some terrible ones. There are ones who could be good if they just shut the frick up once in a while, Gruden I'm looking at you.
I think there should be some talking going on, but I could handle a game without any broadcasting. Not sure why they can't find a happy medium...

The end all be all is the game, but I like the added enhancements. The crowd itself being one. Now, if I just wanted to watch the ravens and falcons on TV muted...almost unwatchable...for me. I will watch a saints game any way I can, and enjoy it.

Additionally, it's show business. Just another production value. Man, A good play by play can make you feel like you're right there. Half the time I'm uninterested in what the color guy has to say, but you need someone to play off the PbP, unfortunately too many networks have this backwards. Gruden, collinsworth, lynch, etc..get too much focus and it's distracting. A good PbP like Tirico or Stockton should be heard more often than one of these clowns

It is absolutely painful though when you get a former player who has no business being a broadcaster (this goes for writers like Peter king too) on TV. The end game is to be entertaining, and too often these guys suck
Charles Barkley being a major exception.
