Would you prefer NFL illegal contact penalty be the same as offside?

Instead of 5 yard penalty + automatic 1st down, it should be 5 yard penalty and replay the down. Pretty much a free play for the offense.

Refs make mistakes all the time. So why put so much trust on the refs judgements of a ambiguous penalty?

This penalty (on 3rd down) is pretty much a turnover for one team. Instead of getting the ball back, the offense continues the drive. This penalty gives refs too much power to determine outcomes.

There should be no automatic first downs whatsoever, IMO.

What's to stop DB's from just leveling/holding receivers on 3rd and long if they're beat?

The rule is in place for a reason.

I wouldn't mind a compromise making it a 10 yard penalty with no automatic first down

That would make a 3rd and 12 into a 3rd and 2 which is much more reasonable. Even when the WR beats the defender and gets mugged there is no guarantee that the pass will be on the money and caught.
