Rumors like this are often wishful thinking.
I think the word you are looking for is "peers." Contemporaries are just other schools that exist at the same time. Nichols State and the Coast Guard Academy are among your contemporaries.
Your peers are other A&M schools: Oklahoma State, Mississippi State, Alabama A&M, and so on. I don't think there are any such schools in the Big 10, though lines get blurred with schools like Nebraska which handle basically everything.
Aspiring to be in the Big 10 is a logical thing for A&M, though. I would enjoy seeing muh SEC get poached.

Will say that now that the SEC has Texas, they don’t need A&M like they used to, and can use that spot to get a bigger brand into the SEC, so it makes sense to let them leave

Miami did just recently get AAU status and since research money dwarfs what schools make from athletics they could be the target.
