Outside the coach's office, there was life within the eyes of Tom Thibodeau. The possibilities percolated. For three years, the coach of these Chicago Bulls has come to the Eastern Conference playoffs with a battered roster bereft of Derrick Rose. For three years, they wondered whether they would ever be whole again, whether management's obsession with ousting Thibodeau would ever let him, let these players, make one more run for everything.

"They sense that you don't get these opportunities all the time," Thibodeau told Yahoo Sports late Monday. "You've got to make the most of them. These guys are starting to build a chemistry. Whatever our circumstances are, we've got to go.

"This is it."

This sounds like this is a lot worse than the Harbaugh/49ers scenario.

Still hard to believe that a coach with his record despite all his faults is gonna be forced out the door by his front office.

Thibs will have a job the second he walks out onto the market.

would be a major mistake by the bulls if they let him go because they got eliminated before the finals.

If he went to a team with a strong GM, he will be fantastic. That being said, it's obvious he drives his players into the ground.

Yet only 1 player on the Bulls roster averaged more than 35 minutes a game. Funny how that works. He's hard on his players but he doesn't ride them into the ground anymore than anyone else in the league with their star player(s). What he does works... and they have the results during his tenure to show for it.

Gar Forman is a strong GM. Thibs is a great coach. That is not an issue. They just don't get along.

That's very interesting. The whole runs them into the ground narrative has been parroted so much that people just assume he does it. Maybe Rose is just injury prone.

I'm really surprised it got this bad....I just don't get it.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of a coach (that's available) that I would want.

So all those stories of extremely rough and hard practices doesn't come into play here?

I just don't get teams like the bulls. Even when they had MJ, they had a GM who wanted to run the show, and claim all the credit, and now it seems like the same thing over. I get some personalities just clash, but why let that get in the way of winning? Players clashing is one thing, but upper mgmt needs to just stay the frick out of it.

How often do those guys practice during the season? Also, it's those hard and rough practices that prepare the players for the reality of NBA, particularly playoff, basketball.

I would literally give my right nut for Thibs to be the coach of the Pels next season and steal Ron Adams from GSW as his lead assistant.

I mean, its not going to happen. He's going to go to Orlando or the Knicks or something, but damn.

Besides Melo, who do the Knicks or Magic have that could lure Thibs to them?

If I were him, I'd want to coach someone like Davis, and it seems like the Pels have good mgmt that could allow Thibs to be successful.

Pelicans management will love him until he starts running their already injury prone players into the ground. The Bulls management saw him risking their biggest assets, and there was literally nothing they could tell him that would make him stop. The guy is a basketball genius, but he just doesn't have any empathy for his players. The guy is a weird dude. No family. Just basketball. I think he's the perfect assistant coach. Overqualified, but perfect. He's missing some qualities that great head coaches have.

He's only been the head coach in Chicago right? I mean if so, he could learn a lesson from this.....

As far as empathy goes, it's his responsibility to get the most out of his players. shite if one star player wanted him gone, you think they'd show him any empathy? The loyalty that most of his players on the bulls roster have shown really suprises me. Players usually throw the coach under the bus quite fast.

Wouldn't go that far... A Boston newspaper had a piece a few years ago on Thibs past, including his family and why he is who he is.

That might be true, but Thibs and Monty are friends, or at least friendly. He's not going to show interest in the job or back-channel it unless Monty is officially fired.

I don't think they would fire Monty unless they know for sure that Thibs will take the job.

So, not going to happen.

Thomas J. Thibodeau Sr., 83, died Wednesday, the day the Bulls defeated the Nets in a nationally televised Christmas game.

Thibodeau traveled to his hometown of New Britain, Conn., after that game and again for Sunday's visitation. In between, he coached Friday's practice and Saturday's home loss to the Mavericks. The funeral was held Monday morning in New Britain.

The guy oftentimes doesn't seem human. Just the way he is.
