history.
When ABA and NBA merged, many of the ABA teams were folded(bought off to close), with a few gaining NBA spots.
But the owners of the St.Louis Spirits(2 years of existence), instead chose to accept 1/7 share, of the 4 ABA teams who went to NBA, revenue rights. (Spurs,Nuggets,Nets,Pacers). And thus, the beginning of the greatest deal in Sports history.
They made from 1976 to 2012 close to 300+ million from those rights. Then, after threatening suit over NBA tv and NBA season pass rights, the Silnas took a buyout of 500Million. Making their deal for rights, instead of 5mil to fold, over $800+Million for them.

Their refusal to settle under onerous terms, thereby turning down free money, is probably what has cost St. Louis an NBA franchise. The NBA has some residual anger towards that deal.
Man, I love the ABA.

The Vancouver Grizzlies were all but coming to St.Louis, but the Owner of the Blues at the time, who was going to buy the grizz, wouldnt listen to NBA, and keep shite on the down low, he kept pissing them off, daily, and within a week, he pissed them off so bad, that they literally told the former Grizz owners, they would buy the team before they would ever let them sell to Bill Laurie.
Bill Laurie was the jackass that tried to buy titles for a few seasons, giving guys like tkachuk, huge deals, then had his partner sell off Pronger for peanuts toward the end of his ownership.
Laurie is another who married one of the Walton(wal mart) girls.
He is also the dbag, who put his name on Mizzous basketball arena, because he swooped in and donated extra cash to name it. Then her dumbass got caught in a academic fraud deal at USC and thankfully they took his idiot daughters name off the arena.
