Will we see the return of the player-coach in the NBA?

There have been 40 player-coaches in NBA history, including Bill Russell, who won two championships as the first black head coach in major pro sports

Dave Debusschere served as player-coach of the Pistons at the ripe old age of 24

The last was Dave Cowens for the Celtics in 1978-79

In a league where "overcoaching" is a real concern, and coaches are getting younger and closer to playing age, will we see it? Or have the dynamics changed too much?

Seems like that could be a way to get around the salary cap, wonder how that would work.

Lakers should have done that - would be epic. Why waste $5 mill on fricking Byron Scott

Steve Kerr could probably come in and hit some game winning threes if he felt like it... Maybe not after back surgery though

He's saying you could pay a star player a ton of money as a "coach" and not as a player

Coaches aren't subjected to the salary cap. You could pay Lebron 30 million to be the coach and it would take up no cap space. Assuming chalmette owl is correct that it's not allowed under the CBA, this is probably a reason why. It could be used as a way to pay beyond a max contract and get around the salary cap.

Kobe has been doing that for the greater part of the decade while phil would just sit there in some sort of vegetative state.
