He was the best QB in CFB in 2006 and had possibly the greatest physical tools in NFL history. That was a no brainer.

He was widely known to be a lazy dunce and only Al Davis takes him anywhere near that high. Listening to him speak at that age, no sane man thought he could lead an NFL team. His interview on the sidelines of that LSU/tOSU Sugar Bowl with Troy Smith was a perfect representation of his inadequacies.

Holy 20/20 hindsight Batman several analysts said he had the most impressive pro day they’d ever seen. There were some thst raised questions about his work ethic and passion for the game burn No one thought the Raiders were reaching and everyone else was going to pass.

Pretty much everyone would have taken Calvin Johnson there. Joe Thomas was an elite OT prospect and available too. Neither had any character questions and were thought to be sure fire all pro type players, and they were.

Look at how good and accurate Burrow is but he can't avoid shite. Sack stat monster.

Burrows problem was that he was holding the ball a bit too long at times AND had an awful OL. Both have improved this year. He is actually pretty shifty for a guy not really known as a runner.

If we were re drafting now that’s true, but at the time no, several teams would have taken Russell because he’s a QB it wasn’t just the Raiders. They just had the first pick

People don't realize this. The Browns probably saved a lot of GMs jobs by taking bad QBs before other teams had a chance to over the past decade and a half or so.

Nah. Megatron and Joe Thomas were sure fire, can’t miss guys by everyone’s measure. Nobody thought Russel was that; high ceiling, low floor.

I think this is a little bit of revisionist history. Not everyone was sold on Jamarcus but nobody said it was a crazy pick.

The Lions and Browns had John Kitna and Derick Anderson as starting QBs respectively…the odds that either pass on Jamarcus were very low.

Yes that’s why they went 2 and 3. The Lions started 35 yo Jon Kitna in 2007, you think they are going WR over QB at one?

At the time no one questioned the Raiders pick, of course there were many with concerns about JR, there were concerns about his work ethic at LSU that’s why he split time with Marcus Randal as RSFR and was benched for the first half of the bowl vs Iowa that year

He just isn’t Lamar, Allen or Mahomes

Burrow is more like Manning/Brady/Brees than this new generation of NFL QB’s in Lamar, Allen, and Mahomes.
Bengals absolutely have to keep padding the O-Line and get Burrow another weapon or two.

O-Line I agree with but Chase, Higgins, Boyd, Hurst, Mixon, and Perine is probably combined a top 3 group in the NFL for WRs/TEs/RBs

Lots of people were picked before him, causing him to not be picked as high.

To put it mildly. And you could say that about Iowa State under Matt Campbell in general.

Suck in September, but roll through October. November is a toss up.

Throw 2 picks in a conference championship and be down 17, but somehow rally back with a chance to win (until he throws another pick on the final drive).

Throw for 150 yds in a Fiesta Bowl, but somehow win comfortably.

Be preseason #23, lose to ULL, finish #9. Be preseason #7, beat CFP contender Oklahoma State, finish unranked. Purdy and the Cyclones were enigmas.

Good post.

Pretty much this.

And there was also an expectation that whoever was not taken between him and Brady Quinn would still go in the top 5-10. Quinn falling to Cleveland at 23 was a major shock on par with Aaron Rogers going from potential first overall to the 20s to the Packers.

Lifelong masochist…errr, I mean Raiders fan. I wanted to throw my tube TV out the window when we picked jabustus. That’s when many Raiders fans realized Al was cooked and had lost his mind. There were a few that tried to polish that turd, but he was dumb as a rock and had no chance of becoming a championship caliber QB.

I agree

I also think Burrow got significantly better at eluding the rush this year as he got further removed from his acl injury.

Last year he was kind of clunking around with a knee brace and holding the ball forever at times. This year when he gets sacked, It’s because 2 lineman get beat immediately.

He might be this generations Aaron Rodgers elusiveness wise.

probably same reason that the former MI start who has won like seven superbowls went in the 7th round.
