Why is horrific coaching so much more common in football than other sports?

Based on the intricate and complex nature of the sport, you would think that only the MOST QUALIFIED AND HIGHEST IQ individuals would be on the sidelines wearing headsets, yet it seems like there are more boneheads and bonehead decisions in this sport than any other sport combined.
Coughlin should have been gone last year and he should be gone tonight, but he is surely not the only waterhead who holds the title of head coach of a major football organization/program.

I was fine with the field goal. The issue was not handing off to Rashad Jennings on third down. Also, Manning snapped the ball at 20 seconds on a play that drive (after the ref kept asking the play clock to be reset).

Just because players don't execute correctly doesn't mean the coach made a bad call. It only takes 1 of 11 players to make a coach look like an idiot.

I ponder this every day. They try to over think everything and end up out thinking theirselves 90% of the time. Sometimes you have to have some balls and throw the book out the fricking window.

Ok, well you are wrong. The FG is a terrible decision. Its not really any harder to score a TD off of a kickoff than it is to get a FG from the 1. Not to mention a FG doesn't beat you and you have an over 50% chance of basically ending the game right there.
Its very very stupid.

Nobody said a player not executing signifies a bad call. A coach doing something that puts his team in a way worse position to win means the coach made a bad call. Regardless of the execution of the players.

Um...Coughlin is a pretty good coach, he's won two titles in NY and before that built an expansion team into a title contender.
Now, he does struggle at the same things some other good but not legendary coaches struggle at-- game management, but that's because there's a ton of different skill sets required by a head coach at any level-- building a program (recruiting/drafting/signing, etc), player development, strategy, opposition analysis, game management and clock management and almost no one is great at all of them.

Because the season is so short in football everything is magnified and it leaves very little wiggle room from greatness to just average.

Apparently you don't watch baseball, where managers will consistently go against the percentages. Hell, you even have managers and GMs fighting with each other over who's starting.

Every coach is going to make decisions that make them look stupid at times. It's part of the business.

The coaches in football have so much more of an impact on the game than other sports so their screw ups are much more impactful.
I certainly don't know as much about the X's and O's and probably any football coach in the country but I have long maintained some of these guys need a "game manager" position on their staff to make decisions for them.
