Why do NFL coaches refuse to kick a FG down by 10 or 11 late in the game?

Makes no sense to me.

Look at the coach in question
No doubt Payton or whisenhunt kick it

Happens all the time. Mike Tirico used to be livid on MNF when this would happen. Did he say anything about it tonight? (at a bar watching)

Yep. The second I get into reasonable fg range I would spike and then kick a fg, especially with a kicker like Robbie Gould, who does not miss.
Then onside kick and hope to recover and score that TD. I would at least to have my QB throw a bomb into the endzone as time expired (or at least go down trying with an onside) rather than hopelessly have the ball with two scores down at the end.

I was disappointed none of the espn guys commented on it.
I wish I was a local media guy to badger a dumbass coach all week about how he's not smarter than a 11 year old who plays madden.

Coaches who definitely don't kick it
Lovie
Caldwell
Reid
Harbaugh
Ryan
Fox
Gailey
Sparano
Coaches who def kick it
Payton
Whisenhunt
Bellichek
Smith
Thoughts on Tomlin? Turner?

One flaw with this statement:
A lot of people do not kick field goals in Madden.

Football coaches are often completely irrational
They should have kicked a FG and then went onside kick
They gave themselves about a .02% chance of winning that game with that strategy
You might bump that to about a 5% chance if you kick the field goal. Still very unlikely but you at least give yourself a chance

This reminds me of the Packers going for 2 yesterday in the third quarter. Ended up not being a factor, but just a terrible decision.

Can we agree on what NFL coaches would not be smart enough to kick?

couldnt disagree more.
are there times when you should kick it and play for the onside kick to prolong the game and all that shite? of course. do i kick it the second im in reasonable fg range? hell no

Def with 18 seconds left though right?

yeah this game, use 5 seconds to boot it, 5 or so to recover the onside kick, and give yourself one hail mary.

When you're down without any timeouts? Hell yeah you kick the FG.

ok so i cross the 40 yard line with 1 minute left and no timeouts (down 10) and i should just kick a fg on first down? frick no

Kick a 40 or 45 yarder, not some 57 yard bullshite.

OK...what did I miss? Did the Bears not kick a field goal with 4 min. left down 11 to make it an 8 point game?

on the final drive when they completed that pass that got them past the 40 with just under a minute left...if they spike it and kick the FG there (assuming he makes it) you then would get to attempt an onside kick down 8 and at least get a couple plays and then a hail mary shot at the endzone
instead they had to run up to the ball after that first down, the clock kept ticking and they ran two or three more plays and then just ran out of time at the 3 yard line without ever getting a chance
you have a better chance of winning by kicking the FG whenever you get close enough IMO

They were down 8...if they kick a field goal they are down 5 and still need a TD.
