Working Nadal with videos into a thread about Roddick.

I'm shocked.

I felt like I transitioned it nicely.

I seem to remember hearing that Roddick was upset about all the t.v. and self-promoting that Gilbert was doing. On second thought, maybe that was why Agassi and Gilbert split. Not really sure. If it was the reason, seems to have been a mistake on Roddick's part.

The Agassi/Gilbert split was amicable. They had been together 6 years, and I think Gilbert thought he should start over with a younger guy - Roddick -- who could learn more from him.

Agassi and Gilbert remained friends, and Agassi got Darren Cahill as his next coach...and Darren Cahill is an excellent coach, so it wasn't a big deal to Agassi.

From what I understand Roddick and Gilbert split because of personality conflicts. Both liked the spotlight a little too much.

O and I remember that Davis Cup Final. I'm not hardcore enough of a fan to say I would have normally known about someone like Rafa, but I was living in Mallorca at the time and he was already a legend there. Watching that kid in that town is one of my favorite memories as a sports fan.

I have to hear more about this story. So you were in Mallorca watching that Davis Cup match at a sports bar with the locals? That's awesome!

Yea it really was surreal. If I remember correctly, Nadal missed the French Open that year because of some sort of injury. It was supposed to be his unveiling to the world and the entire town was so bummed. Watching him rebound against Roddick in the Davis Cup Finals was awesome, but nothing compares to watching his first French Open amongst the locals. It was freaking incredible. Everyone expected him to do extremely well, but win it all? Definitely was past what most people were hoping for. The whole town was going insane. I can only imagine what it was like during the epic Wimbledon 5 setter against Roger.

I was back in the States at that point, but I called some friends during it and they said literally the entire city was shutdown. They said people were dancing in the streets and everything when Rafa pulled it out. The entire city and its people are some of the nicest you'll ever meet and for a champion like Rafa to come from there, well it's just impossible for me not to be a huge fan. I don't know if it's because he's such a homebody or what, but it's remarkable how close and connected those people feel to Rafa. Their bond is like nothing I've seen, even moreso than college football fans and their team or European fans and their soccer. That city would literally kill for Rafa, no hesitations.

I've been pretty lucky with my sports moments. I was also in Italy when they won the World Cup and was back in New Orleans when we won the Super Bowl !

Yeah, he missed the 2004 FO because of an injury. He probably would have won it. He says in his book that he thinks he would have won it, and he isn't prone to making unfounded predictions in real life or in his book, so I have to believe that he probably would have. He was just supremely confident on clay. He writes in his book that he realized when he was 16 that he would be tough to beat on clay.

His friend Carlos Moya, also from Mallorca, won the FO in 2001. A year removed from that when Rafa was 14 or 15, him and Moya were regularly practicing with one another. Moya says (In Rafa's books...it is written half autobiographically and half biographically from different perspectives) that Rafa helped him a great deal in that Moya didn't want to lose to a 14 year old, but Rafa was on his level, and so it made him raise up his game.

I've never been anywhere near Mallorca, and I'm a huge Rafa fan.

You should definitely read Rafa's book. He talks a lot about his close kinship with Mallorca and its people.

I was in Munich. I felt like I was in Italy when what seemed like an Army of Italian soccer fans just took over the streets of Munich. It was crazy. It was like they all got in their cars and just drove up to Munich. Two hours after they won, all these Italian people were there, doing their "Seven Nation Army" fight song chant. No, seriously, their basically singing the bassline to Seven Nation Army. It really confused me.

What brought you to Mallorca?

Yea I've been meaning to checkout his book. I read the Strokes of Genius book about he and Roger's Wimbledon classic, and it's one of the best books I've ever read. I'll definitely be picking up his book soon.
