It most certainly is. Riots after championships is definitely a northern thing.

that view is so stupid to me...nobody set out in August of 2003 to be AP National Champions...AP was just a part of the formula. USC didn't win shite in 03 other than a home game against Michigan

Furthermore, USC didn't even deserve to be in the title game...prior to the game, no one was questioning OUs spot in the game...though revisionist history has made it seem that way because LSU won...no, people were crying that LSU, and not USC, was in the game.

so I don't call it a split, unless you think every publication's rankings determine a separate champion...

USC was the AP national champion. That's about as awesome as being the Campbell's Soup MVP.

It was Split Champions.

No such thing since the BCS started. Unless you think the AP could vote TCU number one tomorrow and we have a spilt this year , playoff or not. Every team in 03 set out to win the BCS championship , one did.

Southerners are more concerned with appearing of a certain social class or above certain things (see: this thread) even when they aren't.

I think most people understand that. But its so long ago i dont care to get back into it.

Only thing i'll disagree with is you saying no one was questioning OU's spot in the title game. I don't think that's true. A lot were after they got blown out. I dont think anyone was questioning LSU's spot to be honest.

So is context apparently. Because this thread is about culture.

Agreed. The pundits were calling for USC/LSU before the title game. OU getting blown out by TCU to lose the BIG 12 should have shut them out

There's a larger class divide in the south than in the north. Many southerners want to make sure you know where they fall leading many southerners to be more calculated in their actions. Much much less so with northerners. Just my experience having lived in USAs melting pot my entire life.

In Kentucky as well. But the overall prevailing culture in each state is not that southern. Maybe southern light.

oh holy god, I remember it crystal clear...I still have the ESPN magazine article I think...there was definitely a huge segment questioning LSU's spot in that game.

the next year, the pundits were billing it "the game we should have gotten" even though LSU won and I'm not one to defend LSU

I respect that 03 team though...the most underrated BCS champion. 2001 Miami is the GOAT secondary...2003 LSU isn't far behind IMO.
