Why Ben Simmons isn't the top prospect in the 2016 NBA draft

Long before some of the loudest but most uninformed voices anointed Ben Simmons the next LeBron James or Magic Johnson, there was already a significant debate within NBA front offices about whether Simmons was even the consensus No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft. As the flaws in Simmons’ game became more apparent for LSU this season, the question has never changed: Who’s No. 1 in June?
For several reasons, Simmons’ candidacy as the No. 1 overall prospect is in peril.
1. Simmons’ lack of competitiveness in some crucial games has raised questions about his character as a basketball player. While many top picks succumb to the NBA star lifestyle and emerge as average competitors, it’s rare to see that at the collegiate level. From Blake Griffin to Michael Beasley to Carmelo Anthony, those elite college players were rarely questioned about their drive during their collegiate careers. Simmons has displayed an apathy for defense, contact and delivering winning plays in crucial moments. Those troubling revelations in Simmons’ game are cause for concern among decision-makers on lottery teams with whom we’ve had contact.

and even without that. just watch brandon ingram play. has the tools of a future star in the league. just needs to fill his body out

Of the handful of games I've seen this season, I haven't been blown away.

I thought the "apathy for delivering winning plays" jab was a nice touch.

His draft stock is down.
Now Ingram is top in some of the mock drafts.

Here’s what NBA teams wonder: If Simmons cares so little about winning crucial college road games at Tennessee or Kentucky that could have delivered LSU to the NCAA tournament, how much will he consistently care about competing over a far more physically and mentally draining 82-game pro season?
It's called a paycheck, you dumb fricks.

Simmons has a better upside than Ingram plus he will flourish with other quality players compared to who he played with this year.

Well I'd be pretty excited not to go to Philly.

ingram is over a year younger if you want to discuss upside.

Well, that's a wrap.

Really think they showed why there was so much backlash on Simmons. ESPN made him out to be some generational talent and kept trying to pound people over the head with this idea despite it becoming more and more obvious that he wasn't one.

He's still going #1 to the Lakers

His failure to impress is just as much JJ's fault as it is Ben's.
This season I would see an offense literally just pass the ball back and forth and no players were moving around. No offensive creativity. Just running down the shot clock, shooting a low percentage shot, miss, and then get a rebound.
The flashes of Simmons's brilliance have come when in court presses and fast breaks. He still produced to the top of most categories.

There is a difference between going #1 in what is considered an extremely below average draft and being the next LeBron James.

He's the best player. This is the worst case of number 1 pick syndrome I've seen being exacerbated by the current media environment.
ESPN might have built him up to much, but who else has been a better prospect since LeBron and Durant?

i doubt it. i think basically everyone can see he wont mesh well with julius randle or two ball dominant guards

Hahaha what a dumb hack job article. You can tell he hasn't watched much of him this season.
Will still be #1 pick
Will still be #1 pick

Seriously? You could make the case that Simmons would have barely been a top 5 pick in last year's draft.
