Why are the Texans the Texans and not the Oilers?

Was Bud Adams that much of an arsehole that he couldn't give the name back to Houston. His team was the Titans by the time the Texans came into the league.

Well the Jazz have been the Jazz in Utah longer than there ever were in NOLA so that one is understandable. The Tn Oilers were only around for 2 bad seasons. Nobody would have been confused if the Houston expansion team would have been called the Oilers.

Right, but the Titans still own the Oilers name.

It pisses me off every time the Titans wear throwback Oilers uniforms because I wish that name and uniform was still in Houston. I like Bob McNair a whole lot better than Bud Adams though, so I would just like the name back.

I was an Oilers fan as a kid.

Certainly not, except that they couldn't call the expansion team the Oilers

The Titans are the Oilers and rightfully so. We are the epitome of tradition and Texas is our colony anyway.

I would be split on it now. Those unis are beautiful and the name is perfect for Houston, but part of me feels the way you described as well. If it had happened like the Browns/Ravens thing I would be all for it

Would kill for the "Love ya Blue" era to be back in H-Town. It'll never happen though. The Oilers literally died with that miserable little frick.

Fun fact - When Bum Phillips died, his funeral was full of thousands of people. When Bud Adam died shortly after, literally no one went to his funeral.

Those oiler uni's are so clean looking. My biggest thing when Benson was looking to move to SA after Katrina was allowing NOLA to keep the saints name and colors.

I understand it's a business and teams move, but keeping the name and colors when you don't even intend to use them in the next city is just unnecessary

exactly I think that a teams name and colors and history should always stay with the city and the fans. If an owner wants to move he/she has to leave that behind.

YES.

As much as Houston people LOVE football, they were willing to HELP him move.

1) They hated him
2) They knew they'd get another NFL franchise

it's criminal that the NFL allowed Bud to hold that name

When the Pelicans changed their name, didn't their rights to the Hornets go to the NBA? I don't think Benson even had the option of denying Charlotte the name/colors. Maybe I'm wrong but that's how I remember it. I'm sure Benson would've given up or sold the rights to Charlotte anyway. I just never remembered us giving permission

In the NBA, the NBA owns the rights. In the NFL the teams own the rights. So yes as soon as the 2012-2013 NBA season was over the rights went to the NBA.
