In the past 20 seasons:

LSU.....................................Ohio State
202-59 (.774).................. 219-43 (.836)
17........Final AP Top 25s........17
12........Final AP Top 15s........16
9..........Final AP Top 10s........15
5..........Final AP Top 5s............9
14-7........Bowl Record...........11-9
5........Conf Championships.....10
4...........NC Appearances.........4
3....National Championships....2
124........Players Drafted........135

Ohio State's record counts their 12-1 2010 season that was later vacated. Also, 3 of their conference championships were co-championships, but there was no championship game until 2011.

So who is it?

ETA- fixed the draft picks. Accidentally counted the 2000 draft class.

Ohio State has been way more consistent, but I would rather the LSU championships

One team plays in the toughest division in football.

The other wins its conference title game by 60

Where I'd lean too, but the Ohio State Top 5 consistency makes it a reasonable debate IMO.

Think we need to look at SOS and records vs top teams before making a final judgement

No super consistent (or easy ) way to do that, but LSU's SOS rating from CFB Reference has averaged 4.76 to 4.05 for Ohio State (higher is better).

LSU’s highs have been higher, but their lows have also been lower.

I imagine Ohio St has been the much more enjoyable team to root for over the same period given their consistent success.

Having said that, if you’re someone who subscribed to the model that you can’t embrace the good times without the bad, then LSU is probably your pick. I imagine I would’ve preferred to be an Ohio St fan, though. People forget how tumultuous and toxic some of those late phase Miles teams were and even the beginning of Ed O’s tenure.

That plus Bowl records makes me think LSU probably has played a tougher schedule and has a better record vs good teams, enough for me to comfortably say LSU’s resume is more impressive

Gotta go with LSU even though we’ve had worse records we have more championships, won head to head and play in a real conference.

This and the championship advantage makes me lean toward LSU, putting bias aside. It is impressive how many guys OSU puts in the NFL and how good they are when they get there. It’s definitely close.

ETA: if they had played each other every year since 2000 I think OSU would have a small series advantage because of the 2014-2017 seasons where LSU was not living up to potential.

In this era of heightened competition, 9 top 5 seasons in 20 years is very impressive

I mean Who’s the second best Big 10 team over that time period?

Penn State or Wisconsin?

OSU no contest.

OSU is significantly more consistent. LSU has way more mediocrity, and two of their three NCs are tainted (split title and a fluke 2 loss title).

You want to talk about the end of that OSU-Miami championship game??
