Some are saying ESPN is trying to move the sport away from him. He was all everyone wanted to see and now they're trying to get the sport more popular without him.

Absolutely no chance that's their motivation. Shaun White is the reason the X Games are still around.

He's the sport's biggest star and the only recognizable athlete in either X Games. There is absolutely no chance they didn't invite him as a way to pass the torch.
And I guess you can look at the ratings without him this X Games to see who watched. If it's not profitable long term, ESPN won't continue to fund it.

I could be wrong as I don't know much about snowboarding, but I'm pretty sure he's nowhere near the best anymore. I mean, he's like 31 or something. At least I hope he's not still the best.
