What's the correlation between draft position and making it to the major leagues?

i.e., in the NFL first or second rounders are basically a sure thing, you have a decent shot in the next few rounds, and it tails off after that. In the NBA if you're not a first rounder you better pack your backs for Europe. What about baseball?

I went through some old baseball cards from early 90's. There was a subset of first rounders, fiture stars or somethong. I didnt recognize one name.

Well the pool is enormous. So it's probably more miss than hit...at least used to be that way. Maybe clubs play it safe with college guys more now, idk.

Every high school kid; college kid; post-college kid, etc.

NFL has it easy. Can't even process how MLB deals with measuring so many prospects at varying ages and stages in development.

Basically you have a much better shot at making to the majors if you are an early round guy. That chance is still small. I remember reading something that rounds 1-5 made up over Half the players in MLB compared to rounds 6-40

I was curious and thinking about this today too. Wife's cousin got drafted in 2nd rd last night out of high school. Was thinking about how likely he would be to make it to majors

Posted this on the rant earlier today. Might answer some of your questions.

Here's a study comparing college vs high school draft picks for the first 5 rounds. College players do better in the early rounds but it balances out in later rounds.

Bottom line is it's hard to make it to the bigs and stay there.

Interesting study if you're into this stuff. D1baseball

Mark Prior

He was just ridiculous. Such a shame how injuries derailed his career. Probably the best young pitcher I can remember until Kershaw came along.

I still vividly remember his 2003 duel with Maddux in the playoffs.
