What NFL teams in the 90s win a Super Bowl with an above average Quarterback?

Above average meaning someone like what Matthew Stafford is today not someone elite like Brett Favre or Steve Young in the 1990s.

No one was going into RFK and beating the Redskins in 1991. That team was a steamroller.

Schottenheimer's Chiefs was the first answer that came to mind for me.

How much of the Chiefs' problem was self-inflicted? In hindsight, it was a revolving door: Deberg, Montana, Bono, Gannon, Krieg, Grbac... I feel like it could have worked with any one of those QBs if they'd stuck with him.

The Saints with a better QB host the game in the SuperDome perhaps?

Those early 90s Saints defenses were some of the best defenses in NFL history. That defense with a prime Drew Brees at QB probably beats that Redskins team.

The 1991 Saints gave up 211 points for the season. The Redskins gave up 224. Over 16 games, that's a negligible difference. The Redskins outscored them 485-341 for the season. That is not a negligible difference.

I think people tend to forget just how dominant the 1991 Redskins were because Dallas, San Francisco, and Green Bay were in the middle of or about to start multiple season runs of greatness. That team was incredible. The average score of one of their regular season games was 30-14 and were significantly more dominant than that in the playoffs.

IMO, that's the most underrated team in league history and they may have been the best single season team of the 1990s, even better than the 1998 Broncos.

I'd like to say the Chiefs but Schottenheimer was just to predictable. He was great at building teams but wasn't a SB winning coach.

1990 New York Giants
1991 Washington Redskins

Does 37-38 year old John Elway with the Broncos count as above-average at that point? He could still heave the ball but he wasn't the speedster he was in his 20s.

Jimmy Johnson admits in his book that his team threw the kitchen sink at the Skins in their win against them because he knew they didn't match up at that time. Couple that with the Skins losing a garbage end of season game after clinching everything early, the 1991 Washington Redskins could have easily gone undefeated if they wanted to.

I am not saying the 1991 Redskins weren’t great because they were, but (at the time) SF was in the first year of the Montana-Young transition and Dallas was young and had not yet acquired a few key pieces. The NYG were starting to age and decline.

Is anyone taking Rypien/Byner/Monk over Aikman/Smith/Irvin or Young/Watters/Rice on their best day? frick no.

1991 Eagles. Randall Cunningham goes down with an ACL in week 1, Jim McMahon leads them to a 3-1 start. He goes down in Week 5 against the Redskins, Eagles lose 4 in a row while he is out with historically bad backup QB’s.

McMahon returns week 10, eagles rip off 6 straight wins, McMahon goes down for good in week 15, and lose to Dallas the next week to end playoff hopes. McMahon was ok and was a winner, but, he was a game manager.

That 1991 Eagles defense was better than the 1991 Saints or Redskins. They led the NFL fewest rushing, passing, total yards allowed, sacks, and tied the Saints with 48 takeaways.. Combine with Prime Randal Cunningham, and they are a Super Bowl team and just as good as the Redskins.

Was any division tougher than 1991 NFC East?
- 1991 Redskins
- 11-5 Playoff Cowboys, 1 year away from 3 Supes in 4 years
- 10-6 Eagles
- 8-8 defending Super Bowl champs Giants
