In regards to the legacy and fan perception of an athlete? I think it is baseball. We hear constantly about championships won by individual athletes in football and basketball. But not as much in baseball I don't believe.

Cause One player has the least amount of influence in Baseball. Now if you have Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling..........

Pretty meaningless in Footbal as well outside of the QB position.

I think Marino's legacy is definitely hurt by the fact he doesn't have one.

I agree (like Typist) that it doesn't matter much for football, but if you're a QB, then it does. Baseball's still the biggest though.

Baseball, no doubt. More of a team sport than any other.

Baseball players do seem to get excused more from the championship talk. But I do remember a lot of chatter about if "a-rod doesn't win a championship, then how does it affect his legacy" a few years ago.

it might hurt marino, but he is still considered one of the best ever. i have a hard time finding his counterpart in basketball... ewing maybe? but marino was a better qb than ewing was a baller.

jim kelly is another. though i think you could compare him to say, barkley, pretty easily.

Karl Malone and Barkley come to mind as basketball players who are remembered for not winning championships.

Baseball's more of a team sport in a different ways. I'd say both football and hockey are more, but that's more from a chemistry/working together standpoint. Baseball's a team sport in that you have to have your teammates come through more than probably any other. It's all individual matchups, but you only get a few chances, and all nine have "equal" opportunities. You can go 4/4 with 4 HRs and yet your team could potentially lose if you don't have much help.

baseball

when i hear people atlk about the "greatest" ever in baseball, weather overall, pitcher, hitter, etc, no one ever mentions lack of titles for guys like Ted Williams, Ty Cobb, etc

i agree. but they are both in that "second tier" of great players. i think a lot of that is because they didnt win a ring.

i dont think any reasonable list of all time great QBs (or football players for that matter) exists without marino near the top.

jim kelly = malone and barkley. malone was probably a better basketball player than kelly was a football player though.

Maybe if you're just discussing who is the greatest at the moment, because the cup is only once every 4 years.

However, if you're having a 'greatest of all time' discussion, then I'd say the cup matters a lot.
