I don't know what makes you think they were going to tackle time on that play, when they couldn't tackle him all game. Dicky Maegle had over 260 yards and 3 Tds then cotton bowl records.

1954 Cotton Bowl play (film clip)
Also features a much later interview w/Dicky Moegle/Maegle (from the '80s I'd guess). Dicky wasn't very amused by the tackle, claiming it came very close to crippling him.

If you're the referee, what can you possibly do if you see this play as palpably unfair and can only enforce this rule by distance?
Maybe call unsportsmanlike, half the distance to the goal, to be enforced on the free kick?

The short answer to your question is No
Multiple fouls happen all of the time in football and the lesser fouls are automatically declined
So in that case, 1 of the 10 penalties would have stood and it would have been a safety
By the way, that is SOP when taking an safety to preserve a lead. Everyone holds knowing the penalty is a safety anyway. It is taught by coaches

My first thought was that could have been REALLY REALLY bad. SOB went low too.

Dude was going to get tackled around the 25. One of the Bama players had a great angle on him.
No one's ever broken a tackle or juked and made a guy miss before.
