What is the point of having a 600 mile race?

The cars are durable now and last the entire race. That last 100 miles isn't as tough on them as it used to be.

The race is now at night so heat is no longer a factor either. The race used to be a punisher, no longer.

To sell more advertising and consessions than a 500-mile race.

I just wish someone could explain the stages and their purpose.

I havent followed nascar, but my kid loves to watch race cars on tv. He like the races and anything is better than mickey mouse roadster racers so I'll take what I can get.

It goes back to when NASCAR had an inferiority complex versus Indy and F1 racing. So the good ole boys decided that having a race that went 600 miles would be show them and don't forget the race used to be called the World 600. Like it was the championship of the entire world.

Stages give drivers more points and the winner of each stage gives that driver 1 extra playoff point. Every driver inside the top 12 has something to race for at the end of each stage if you make the top 10

It also helps drivers get back on the lead laps with extra cautions. So an early mistake won't cost a driver

Not because of a 600 mile race. Blame it on the restrictor plates, if you want to place blame.
