Usually it's two pretty good teams matched up

They give teams a chance to build their resume with an additional game.

CCG got OSU into the playoff two years ago.

The SEC champion does not determine the Pac-12 champion, so there is no point, nationally. A conference champion is a conference champion, not necessarily a national champion, and not necessarily the best team in its conference.

Not much. There are still 12 other games that mean just as much.

so the champion of a conference is not the best team in the conference, despite "settling it on the field"?

So why not just award it to the best conference record, with no championship game?

Has there ever been a point? Why does there have to be a point?

It determines the champion of the conference.

What's the point of the National Championship?

I would assume so

Because large organizations generally refrain from spending shitloads of money on pointless endeavors.

but not the best conference team.

Generally it only gives a "lock team" a chance to lose their spot.

Huh? Football makes money

The best team in conference play, but not necessarily the best overall team in the conference. Because Out of Conference Games exist.

Nationally?
Yeah. Is there a point to the National Championship besides crowning a National Champion?

Anytime there is a playoff, the door is open for a team who isn't the best team to be the champion. "Best team" and "champion" aren't necessarily the same thing. LSU wasn't the best SEC team in 2001. Kansas State wasn't the best Big 12 team in 2003. Villanova wasn't the nation's best basketball team in 1985. The New York Giants weren't the best NFL team in 2007. There is no reason you shouldn't know this.

Ask them. I didn't write the rules.

CCG also cost Ohio State a NCG appearance three years ago.

The correct answer is money.

Nationally there's not much of a point because the championship of a conference only takes 8 or 9 games into account. For a national championship all games are considered... However a CCG win can be taken into account when all else is equal, such as when a team wins it's CCG and goes 12-1 while a team in the Big XII is only 11-1.

If I knew, I'd tell you.

Wait. . .what?

Hell last year tOSU lost 1 game, to the division champ who went on to win the conference. MSU got in and that was that. They had same number of loses and the head to head, aside from conference championship

This year is different. PSU has two losses

1 loss has always been better than 2 losses. Even if the 2 loss has the head to head. That's the way rankings work. That's the way standings work within leagues

Money for the bigshots. Entertainment for us. That's pretty much the only point of sports

Wait. . .what?
Conference play is only part of a season. It is possible for Team A to have better conference play, but Team B to have a better overall season.

Doesn't seem to matter in the big10.

You said the best team in the conference plays for the title, but they may not be the best team in the conference.
