Tennis is probably the most comprehensive sport in terms of athleticism, strategy, and skill ( for every participant)

Golf is more mentally challenging. Like someone said, you have so much time to overanalyze each shot

Thats physical. Not mental. In golf the wind and rain are HUGE factors that effect your total gameplan.Yes they play the same holes for Four days but how windy is it. How much rain did/are we getting .How soft will it make the grens?? What about Wind and rain at the same time? The elements do not factor this way in tennis.

I think this is actually a good discussion. And a close call.

I'll still vote tennis, but I could be biased because I've played a lot of competitive tennis (and still play recreationally). I play golf sometimes, but I don't really care how I play, so nerves don't come into play.

Wind and the sun can be big factors in tennis.

I hit my 7 iron from many different distances, depending on the lie, wind, distance, etc..

still a whole lot more thinking than when I am running down a shot in tennis

I'd imagine playing quarterback at a high level is pretty damn tough as well

In golf, you have a 4-5 hour round where 95% of that time is thinking

In golf, 98% you are walking and talking to a caddy that was out in the early morning looking at pin placement and gathering information on the course while you were eating eggs and bacon.

Point is in golf you are not thinking constantly or even as remotely as much as pitching or tennis.

In tennis, nobody to talk to when you just got news that your coach has terminal cancer.

Nobody to tell you to calm down when you go balistic.

in golf, 98% of players don't have a caddy, mostly just the pros and rich guys. so for a guy like me, there is a whole lot of thinking going on (usually too much)

True, that is more reactionary. I guess I'm just thinking about between points, planning strategy, etc. and when serving. I'm sure to the casual observer the serve looks pretty easy, but when you're tight, exhausted and having to toss that ball with your off hand, it can be pretty tricky.

These comments kill me. If you haven't been inside the ropes, you have no clue what you're talking about

Yeah, to me, there is so much talent in the top 100, but what keeps most of them from breaking through is their head. It seems like in golf you have a no name winning a tournament every week.

Agreed, but I am talking at a professional level.

If you want to look at it from more of a casual level, let me know the next time you have a beer cart girl driving around the tennis courts getting you hammered.

i would also add that tennis is not as mentally tough because you know for the most part what you are going to get out of yourself. that is why there aren't as many upsets in tennis. in golf, there are days when you don't have it and it costs you a few shots. this is why there are so many different winners on tour.

Tennis- the most mentally challenging sport playing against someone else. Where you have to get the other person to run their little arse off to get to the ball, charge the net to throw in a wrinkle and have two serves and know when to use them. Yes is it mentally challenging!

Golf- the most mentally challenging sport against nature. the phrase "A good Walk spoiled" refers to how tough the game is between the ears. Knowing what your shot is going to do every time you step on the course is something very few players accomplish. You have 14 weapons that could fail at any time if you tell them to, but will act perfect if you tell them also. There is no sport like it, you control the outcome completely, no opposition to get in your way, just the course and your golf swing!
