When I was younger, a bunch of us would regularly drive down from Michigan for a weekend of caving in Kentucky. We liked to talk to the locals about caves they knew about, history of the community, good campsites, stuff like that.

One time I remember pretty well was when we asked a town deputy (sheriff? PD? - dunno but he drove a cruiser and wore a uniform) about whether it was OK to hike into some woods nearby looking for cave entrances. His answer was basically, "Sure, that's no problem, but make sure you don't get too far to the south in there -- the marijuana growers don't like company."
