Dont think getting rid of facemasks would fix anything. Sure, there would be fewer guys head hunting...but collisions would still occur, and the damage would be much worse. Lots of knocked out teeth. Has anybody done any studies on the long term effects of rugby.
never seen a study, but you can get plenty of anecdotes from current or former rugby players on this board. Worst injury to head or face I ever saw while playing was a bloodied nose, and that was because the poor little back ran into the arm of a teammate.
There are plenty of fun collisions, but you play differently when you don't have a hard helmet and face mask to use as a weapon.
