It was either Osgood or Vernon beating Roy's arse. I still dislike him, but he was so fricking good.

The Yankees hadn't won a pennant before Ruth

Selling Babe didn't kill Boston and didn't start the Yankees rise.

First off, before he sold Ruth the Boston had already been selling his more talented players to the Yankees like Carl Mays Dutch Leonard, Duffy Lewis, and Ernie Shore. He continued to do so after the Ruth sale as well. The Ruth sale wasn't the only time he used Yankees money for his financing of plays. He even took out a loan form the Yankees owner using Fenway as collateral.

1918 was the last Boston WS. That year the Yankees were 4th, 13 1/2 games back. Of note, the nickname "Murderers' Row", given to the Yankees powerful batting lineup, was started here, two years before Babe ever joined the Yankees.

Babe was still on the Sox in 1919 when Boston started their decline finishing 6th out of 8 in the AL, 20 1/2 games out of first. The Yankees meanwhile had finished 3rd, 7 1/2 games from first behind Cleveland and Chicago.

In 1920 the Yankees again finished 3rd behind Cleavland and Chicago but this time were 3 games back. Boston remained terrible and finished 5th, 25 1/2 games out.

Now while the Black Sox scandal was form the 1919 World Series, the story didn't hit until during the 1920 season, and the trials didn't happen until 1921. Before the season started, the baseball commissioner suspended 8 players from Chicago which gutted the team.

As a final parting shot to the Sox, their manager Ed Barrow, the man who decided Babe was better as a batter than a pitcher, left to be the Yankees business manager (and essentially what we would now call the GM) in 1920 and proceeded to build a dynasty. (Oddly enough, he was also most responsible for Ruth never getting a shot at being a manager once his playing days were over.)

So in just a few short years, two of the better teams in the standings in front of the improving Yankees were detonated either by suspension/scandal or an owner who's priorities went from winning in baseball to funding plays and musicals.

So while Babe was a very important important piece for the Yankees he certainly was not the main reason Boston collapsed and the Yankees became so good. Ruth getting all the credit is after the fact star worship. Hell, the term "Curse of the Bambino" didn't even appear in New York or Boston papers until the early 90s.

Semi-hijack...Pappas' lifetime stats are almost exactly the same as Don Drysdale's.

Carry on.

Gretzky?

Yes, I think so. When you consider that I was not a hockey fan and I knew all about it, it seems like it was a huge deal.
