Ironic that this poster goes by the name "Open Your Eyes." It's irrelevant what Calvin Johnson or Dez Bryant would have to say regarding the process of the catch. The only authority on the process of the catch is the NFL rule book.

I wonder if that play happened and the NFL wasn't using replacement refs if the ref who made that call would have got as much backlash. There have been plenty of other calls that refs fricked up that were more obvious than this, and had a larger impact.

Simply the ruling on a Seattle catch on that play was bad enough to be the worst call of all time.

Not only is it not the worst call of all time, it's not even the worst call the Seahawks have benefitted from on Monday Night Football in the last decade.

It was a bizarre play that looked even worse when both refs made the exact opposite call. I was surprised they didn't huddle first, then make a call. I remember watching 10 minutes later still not knowing who won the game. I hope the guy is able to get his life together.

Worst call in NFL history.

Immaculate Reception?

You'd be correct.

The NFL had a rule at the time (removed in 1978) that if one offensive player was the first to tip a pass, it couldn’t legally be caught by another offensive player.

The ball ricocheted off a Steelers WR after Tatum nailed him as he was making a catch...

There ya go.

I didn't understand why so many people were that hard on the replacement refs. Maybe blame the greedy arse NFL for not paying up instead.

He needs to talk to Jim Joyce. It seems he's been able to overcome his call and it was way worse than the call this guy made as a high school referee placed into the NFL.

One reason Joyce got a pass is the commissioner has broad authority to act "in the best interests of the game". Selig could have made that right, and since he's already unpopular he was a convenient scapegoat.

That Seattle pass near the endzone, in Super Bowl 49, that was intercepted and resulted in a Patriots victory was the worst call in NFL history. I was happy to see it, and to see Pete Carroll go down in defeat

Fail Mary was indeed an horrendous call on so many strata. Why was there no offensive interference called on Golden Tate prior to the Jennings interception?

Also, the defensive pass interference call 4 plays earlier, when it was obvious offensive PI, was enough to sicken the least squeamish. What kind of hallucinogens did the referees ingest that afternoon?

Worst call was Vinny Testaverde TD when the ball never made it anywhere close to the goal line.

Lance Larson
quote:

Individually, Larson also received a silver medal in the men's 100-meter freestyle at the 1960 Olympics, and featured as a participant in one of the most controversial Olympic swimming finishes ever. John Devitt of Australia was listed as the winner of the men's 100-meter freestyle race. Results were decided by finish judges who relied on their eyes and did not use replays. Three judges were assigned to each finishing position. There were three official timers in 1960 for each lane and swimmer, all timing by hand. All three timers for Devitt, in lane three, timed him in 55.2 seconds. The three timers for lane four timed Lance Larson in 55.0, 55.1, and 55.1 seconds.

Former Olympic swimmer and FINA co-founder Max Ritter inspected the judge's score cards. Two of the three first-place judges found that Devitt had finished first and the third found for Larson. Of the three-second-place judges, two found that Devitt finished second and one found that Larson was second. Ritter pointed out to chief judge Henry Runströmer of Schweden that the score cards indicated a tie. Runstrümer cast the deciding vote and declared Devitt the winner. However, the rules at that time did not provide for the chief judge to have a vote or give him the right to break ties. Ties were supposed to be broken by referring to the timing machine. The official results placed Devitt first and Larson second, both with the identical time of 55.2 seconds.

The United States team appealed, bolstered by videotaped footage of the finish that appeared to show Larson the winner. The appeal jury, headed by Jan de Vries, also the President of FINA in 1960, rejected the appeal, keeping Devitt the winner. This controversy would pave the way for electronic touchpads to be included in swimming events to determine finish and accurate timing.

1972 USA-Russia Olympic basketball was pretty bad.

quote:

Under enormous pressure, the Illinois State guard sank both free throws giving the Americans a 50-49 lead, their first of the game. After the Soviets in-bounded the ball, the referees halted the game with one second remaining. The decision was made to put three seconds back on the clock. At issue was the Soviets' contention that they had signaled for a time-out between Collins' two free throws. The game officials never acknowledged the time out. The validity of whether a time-out was legally signaled for has divided passions on this game for 30 years.

quote:

After the Soviets in-bounded the ball a second time, the horn sounded signaling an apparent American victory. Moments later, the teams were ordered back on the floor because the clock had not been properly reset to show three seconds remaining. Because of this mistake by the scorer's table, the celebrating Americans stood in disbelief when they were told they had not won anything yet.

quote:

"We couldn't believe that they were giving them all these chances," said U.S. forward Mike Bantom. "It was like they were going to let them do it until they got it right."

quote:

Alexander Belov, who moments earlier had been the goat, became the hero. Rising between Americans Jim Forbes and Kevin Joyce, Belov caught a full-court pass and scored the winning lay-up as time ran out, this time for good.
