OAKLAND, Calif. -- It's safe to say that the Golden State Warriors were pulling for the LA Clippers to advance past the Utah Jazz in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. Their rooting interest, however, had nothing to do with matchups on the basketball court. Rather, it had everything to do with where they will spend their leisure hours when the second-round series shifts to Games 3 and 4.

quote:

“No comparison. There’s no such thing, man,” Warriors’ forward Matt Barnes told ESPN. “There’s no nightlife in Utah. Obviously, as players, you want to be able to have a little bit of a nightlife, but the main focus is winning games. Me personally, I want to get out there because I want to beat the Clippers. That’s my former team, and my kids are out there. But as far as nightlife, there’s no comparison to nightlife in Utah and L.A.” Andre Iguodala, who technically signed with the Jazz before he joined the Warriors, also said Utah is boring: “The problem with Utah is that you’re just sitting there and your mind is, like, dead, because in L.A., you still got energy for the game,” Andre Iguodala said. “Because you’re in L.A., you’re like, ‘Man, this is just the vibe in L.A.’ but in Utah, it can kind of lull you to sleep. And then you’ve slept too long or I’m bored out of my mind and now you got to try to pump yourself up for the game. You know you’re in the playoffs and you’re supposed to be pumped anyway, but the vibe is just like, ‘Man, let’s just get out of here.’”

They could always go to Sky. Seems like a place NBA players would like to hang out:

NBA players, and really professional athletes in general, are such bros. I'm sure I could find plenty to do here

Obviously Salt Lake is no LA, but its a big city, there has to be something to do right? I've never been so correct me if I'm wrong, but they're going to be there for what like 3-4 days so surely you can find something to do. Maybe its because the lack of "culture and diversity" in the citizens.

For the lifestyle of an NBA player and partying, it's a step behind. It's a beautiful and clean city, though. Everyone is very nice. I've been a handful of times and enjoy it every time, but I can see where the night life might lack.

They have a lot of crazy booze laws and nightclub laws, etc. And it is an extremely white city.

NBA players notoriously do not like it there.

Obviously compared to other NBA cities (LA, SF, NY, Miami) it probably gets an F. I would understand why a player would't want to sign there because of everything it lacks compared to these other cities, but it can't be that bad for the 3-4 nights they'll be there foe the series, right?

That's all I'm saying, seems like much ado about nothing, IMO.

I think that's a bit overblown. They've been able to sign free agents. Obviously not many max level guys but they've had better success with FAs than even maybe an Atlanta or Charlotte.

It's the 48th largest metropolitan area in the US (right above Birmingham) with a 3% black population and a white population that is largely Mormon, a religion that forbids (among other things) drinking alcohol and premarital sex. Of course there isn't going to be a ton of nightlife for NBA players, especially when compared to L.A.

I would too. SLC seems pretty awesome in a lot of ways to me.

But the average NBA player will have a much different perspective. Its why you always see certain types of players drafted and be successful in Utah. They need to bring in different guys.

I can tell you with certainty Karl Malone did not have a problem with this. I estimate he has between 18-22 kids.

It's not like they have time to go hike the mountains.

They want to get a meal after the game and slide into some Instagram hoe that DM'ed earlier.

LA is with out a doubt better for that.

This means lots of white chicks. That's a good thing

I've heard things about the groupie and party scene in Salt Lake City. Some of those repressed Mormons get buck wild.
I've told this story before: My wife was a flight attendant for a major airline in the early 2000s and went to Salt Lake City a lot in the run up to the Olympics. If you weren't an average white guy, the ladies over there loved you because you were exotic. She worked with European guys and black dudes who had crazy stories -- like they were pulling threesomes.
