It's a May evening in Las Vegas, Nevada. Davis, a 44-year-old public works employee, is holding a town hall meeting, discussing his candidacy for the Clark County School Board. He'd like to expand the school lunch program, offer more college prep courses, and explore building dorms for students who need housing. It all sounds innocuous, even boring, and none of it explains why Davis has appeared on local television and USA Today's website, nor why a camera crew is setting up at the back of the room.
Oh, and it definitely doesn't explain why Davis has been called a "dork," a "pussy," a "gay," and a "nanny state liberal" who's "almost as krazy as Hillary."
No, the reason Davis has attracted attention and ire is simple: he wants to eliminate public high school football. Friday Night Lights out. No more homecoming games, sweaty August two-a-days, and afternoon-in-the-auditorium pep rallies. Adios to a beloved American tradition played by roughly 1.1 million high school students nationwide (double the participation number of the next most popular prep sport, track and field), and by approximately 3,600 students in Clark County, the country's fifth-largest school district.

Damn, guess I stuffed this fairies arse into a locker one too many times.

I'm sure that would go over well in the black community.

I don't agree with him, but I admire his courage to stand up for what he believes to be right in the face of likely ridicule and outrage.

A lot of money is wasted on high school football programs

For fricks sake nobody is forcing the kids to play. Most know the dangers and do it anyway because it's fun and breeds new friendships. It can also get you a free scholarship and hopefully millions.

So this dork is still mad about the girl in high school that he liked being pounded by the football star that really didn't give two shits about her? Or is this about his son not being able to get attention from the cheerleaders because he is a whimp?

Maybe start them playing tackle at high school and just do 7 on 7s untill then.

Honestly all football should be banned and it will be within 25 years.

Unfortunately there will be professional flag football within the next 25 years

forcing some to actually plan for a real future, instead of believing that the NFL is their way out, might help some.
Some places, the kids believe sports is their way out, not actually planning a future, learning a trade, getting a degree, etc.

Why do we people want to destroy football? It is a great sport that millions of people love to play and/or watch. Yes, it can be dangerous, but it is a great game and a major source of enjoyment, passion, and way of life for so many people.

Yes, it can be dangerous
And I'll first admit I didn't read the story, but I'd guess he only chose high school because these are kids that are, what, as young as 15 years old...it may be their choice, but the argument is that it's dangerous enough to maybe consider that a 15 year old isn't properly equipped to make that decision.
I see the argument, though not saying I agree with.

I wonder how many additional teenage black males would be murdered every year if football was gone.
