This is why I think that rule is kind of dumb. Momentum is stopped and play is basically dead, but because you're on a pile, you're not down. Even worse, sometimes everyone stops like the Dyer play in the NC game.

Nothing to complain about with that recovery. Guy was fighting for more yards and the ball came out. The first guy to realize grabbed it. Had nothing to do with the whistle.

if the whistle is blown before anyone recovers the play is dead and Utah keeps the ball. so that actually is important.

I know this is counter-intuitive, but I'm pretty sure the whistle has to blow before the ball pops loose for the play to be dead.
