Unpopular opinion: Bill Elliott is the most popular NASCAR driver of all time. Not Dale Sr

And you can't really disagree since Bill was voted the most popular driver by the fans more times than anyone else. 16 times to be exact.
Dale Earnhardt Sr. only won the award once and it was the year that he died.
Bill Elliott's son is on pace to pass Dale Jr's total of 15. Chase Elliott already has 4 to his name.

Dale Sr was in Baseketball, Bill Elliott was not.
I rest my case.
I rest my case.

...and Elliott Sadler was on the cover of the EA game at one point. That's not saying much.
People who don't know anything about racing know that Dale was a NASCAR driver. 95% of non-NASCAR fans wouldn't have a clue about Bill. Dale had the commercials, the movies, everything. There are still people to this day with 3 stickers on their vehicles with Dale's signature on it.
Being popular with NASCAR fans is one thing, but Dale was popular beyond NASCAR.

People know that Dale died. So much of his legacy is tied to his death. Sort of like Nirvana.
That said, I never really u derstood Bill's popularity.

Fans liked Bill because him and his brothers built their own cars and hauled them to track on an open trailer. Ernie built the motors. Fans loved the small teams and to see him do well after risking it all meant something.
Dale Sr had a great background story too but drove for others. He was a character who had great quotes after wrecking for checkers often enough and fans took a liking to that. But fans still liked Bill who would always drive clean so the sport had that good guy bad guy persona going.
Dale Sr became more iconic after death. He built a big empire he was way ahead of the racing world in getting merchandising going to a new level.
There is no wrong answer both were popular for different reasons. “Rattle his cage” was a catchy phrase Dale invented. He had a persona that played well to keep fans going against each other. “Pass in the grass” with Dale and Bill was an iconic phrase moment created by TV, fans were in one side or the other of what really happened leading up to that.
Also back then you had manufacturer wars. Nascar would decide what mods each could have before the year and fans were never happy about concessions given to their rivals. Now you have a clone car. Those concessions mattered at bigger tracks. Bill always did great regardless aero because Ernie was best engine builder in business back then. Eventually big teams had big engine budgets and phased out anyone like Ernie (or Yates).

he drove the mcdonalds car, fatties from around the south, loved the thought of big macs, fries, nuggets, and a diet coke.
