So, gathering from another thread:
ULL had $18,111,361 ($7.6 million subsidy came from school) with expenses of $18,652,324
LA Tech had $18,570,493 ($9.2 million subsidy came from school)with expenses of $18,444,386.
ULM cost $4mm in 2013 subsidy from the school.
So, basically the state taxpayers subsidized the collective of three state FBS programs, outside LSU, to the tune of $22.4mm last year.
That is awesome for the public fisc.

I think these schools are allowed to transfer a maximum of 3% of the general university funds to apply towards athletics. They can transfer 0% if they choose and it would all go towards academics. The presidents see a value in athletics and they usually transfer the full 3%
(it may be more than 3%... 5%?)
Edit to add: It looks like ULM is not using the full amount.

What is the difference between athletic scholarships and TOPS?
Student athletes have to maintain a certain GPA to stay eligible. They represent their universities in the classroom, on playing service and in the community.
Let also not forget that athletics is the major marketing tool of their university.
Get off your high horse.

Higher education funding has been a mess in Louisiana for years. It's not like these FBS programs created the problem.

7 public D-1 universities don't use a state subsidy/transfer from general fund for athletics.
Texas, LSU, Oklahoma, Purdue, Ohio St., Penn St., and Nebraska.
OK St. operated at a $3M loss last year while taking a $7M subsidy.
ULL, ULM and Tech are not unique in how they try to generate funds for athletics from the rest of the country, except for the fact that any student fees for athletics must be approved by the students, while many other states don't have that restriction.

Great post...when you add in Grambling, Southern, Nicholls, Southeastern etc...it came out to near $45 million the taxpayers paid. They should sell tickets or get out of the business...sickening!

Students in TOPS need to maintain a certain GPA or they lose TOPS for good. Our at least get bumped down a level. Athletes who let their GPA drop get suspended from football but don't lose their scholarship.
With that said, almost every school in the nation gets a state sibsidy.

Because LSU always operated solely on self-generated revenue for athletics, right?

I guess you forgot about all the private schools or we just have a different understanding of the phrase "almost all schools".

Add in the cost of Nichols State, McNeese St., Grambling, Southern, SLU, Northwestern, UNO, and others and the amount is even greater.

You're quoting the wrong person, but 10% is a pretty small #

In 2011-12, athletics programs at 23 of 228 Division I public schools generated enough money from media rights contracts, ticket sales, donations and other sources (not including subsidies from institutional or government support or student fees) to cover their expenses.
