Should replace Chris Young and take over for Gardner or Ellsbury eventually.

Traded him John Ryan Murphy....

Yankees also dealt Jose Pirela to the Padres for a minor league player.

He was a solid player last year. Should be a good trade for the Yankees.

So does he lower the Yankees average age below 36?

Read something earlier about this possibly making Brett Gardner a trade piece soon.

Nice deal for New York. I think Hicks will be an above player this year. He is showing improvement in certain facets of his game and has an interesting profile.

Tex, Beltran are off the books next year
ARod, McCann, and Headly the year after I believe....

Basically Ellsbury and Gardner are only players over 30 signed for next 3+ years it seems

(Not sure on AROD without looking it up)

Aaaaand, there's your downside! Cashman doesn't deal in team chemistry.

Its a good deal for both sides; the Yankees need someone to take over the CF duties from Ellsbury in a few seasons, as he's just starting to show the fringe signs of wear now; Hicks was finally coming around a little as a hitter late last year, but was still a minus bat/plus glove outfielder.

The Twins needed a severe upgrade from non-hitting Kurt Suzuki behind the plate; its hard to contend for the playoffs when you are throwing out a lower end backup catcher 130+ games. If John Ryan Murphy can even be a replacement level catcher, he's a big addition-- and the departure of Hicks (and retirement of Hunter) help clear out what has become a very crowded outfield, and guarantee that Buxton is with the big club from Day 1 next year.

This is the sort of deal that can work out well for both parties, pretty easily.
