Bama

Does it really matter after that? Auburn doesn't deserve to be up there though.

There aren't Top 4 teams in CFB.

There are two...and a rotating door of pretenders each week.

Bama and Clemson are the best obviously but Georgia looks great. Auburn's d is super salty too. If they have their offense fixed, they could make Saban shite his britches.

Penn State is top 4, they really don't have much of a weakness.

I think Clemson is right there with them.

They've looked just as good against a tougher schedule so far.

I think it's a bit of a drop to the next group, and they all have their faults. UGA might be able to get there if Fromm and their OL keep improving. Hard to tell on UW - I think they might be really good, but they just haven't played anyone. PSU has looked really good at times but did not play well in Iowa City. Wazzu actually looks pretty damn salty, but lack of depth usually catches up with teams like that over the course of the year. I don't think TCU, Wisconsin, or Miami have proven a ton, but they all might be pretty good.

Then you have the crew of 1 loss teams that all have flaws but are plenty capable - USC, Auburn, OU, Ohio State, and - dare I say it - ND - that could beat a lot of teams on any given night.

Maybe, but AU hasn't proven themselves yet. We will get our chance.

Bama UGA Clem and Penn State. Don't sleep on Notre Dame sneaking into the cfp. I can see them winning out.

1/1a Bama and Clemson
3 Georgia
4 Penn St or TCU

I think you could make an argument for both teams. Penn St. is getting a lot of love imo because of their preseason ranking, but if they can win out they will most definitely deserve to be top 4. TCU has 2 really good wins this year.

Top 2 are Bama and Clemson. These 2 teams are in a class of their own right now. Clearly the top teams in the nation for the 3rd straight year.

Penn State, Oklahoma, TCU, USC, Auburn, UGA, Ohio State, Washington and Wazzu all look pretty good. They are in the next tier. It will be interesting which 2 of these 2 teams will make it into the playoffs to lose to Bama/Clemson

Bama
Clemson
Georgia
and for me, right now, TCU..

All that will change likely.

I don't like Washington. Seen them play multiple times this year and their offense is not great. They would struggle mightily against TCU even. I love their defense though. They are legit on defense without question. It is like they are playing JV teams with their varsity against the Pac-12 teams they face.

I think a 1 loss team that has already lost a game will sneak in like Ohio State or Auburn. Auburn controls it's own destiny for sure right now if they win out.

Everyone is going to lose but two teams.

Clemson and Alabama.

And they will probably face teams that have no business being in the playoff but for name recognition.

Maybe almost every other team doesn't belong?

I think if we had the old BCS this year (and all the total bitching it used to engender about teams left out of title game) - I think this year...nobody would complain...they'd be like, ya...those two teams...everyone stop crying. CFB is dead.

I think we're an interesting proposition at the moment.

We are damn talented at a lot of positions - as talented as anyone not named Alabama, Ohio State, or Clemson - and we seemingly have started to put things together, but we're still in a gray area. I think it's telling that neither UGA nor we played a particularly good game against each other, and it was a dog fight until the last 30 seconds.

The computers absolutely love us - we are 7th in the Massey composite, and virtually every computer worth a crap has us between 5th and 10th. It's an odd position to be Notre Dame and feel like you're underrated.

If Wimbush and the receivers start to put things together, watch out. We could probably beat anyone with this iteration of our program, including Alabama and Clemson, if that happens. If not, then we are in a lot of trouble. Of our closing six games, five of them are currently ranked teams (#11, #13, #20, #23, #25), and the sixth is receiving votes in at least one poll. If we go 11 - 1, we are definitely in the playoffs against this schedule - probably without any qualifications at all.

It's been one of those "eye test" sort of things, and the computers back my eye up on that. We obliterated a team that might well compete for the toughest division in college football this year and have destroyed everyone we've played sans UGA. Weird to be in that position as an ND fan, because I am used to human polls humiliatingly overrating us and then watching us get stomped in meaningful games. I think the opposite might happen this year.
