March 14, 1954 Hank Aaron, filling in for Bobby Thomson who broke his ankle yesterday, starts his first game wearing a Braves uniform. The 20 year-old from Mobile, Alabama makes such an impression when he collects three hits, including a home run, in the spring training game against Boston that the club offers him a major league contract.

I remember reading about Ted Williams, at a Sox-Braves preseason game, heard Aaron taking BP, and asked the reporters who was hitting. When told it was 'a kid named Aaron', Ted told all assembled to keep an eye on anyone who hit shots that sounded like that.

I read Aaron's biography. He started hitting cross handed. IE, his right hand was at the bottom of the bat and his left hand on top. The Braves corrected it when he went to Eau Claire for minor league work.
Another strange batting grip was Leon Wagner who used a split grip.
Daddy Wags left 3 inches between hands to create leverage. Bottom hand was pulling back while top hand was pushing forward.
