College softball is very fun to watch. It's my personal #3 college sport.

And we've won 2 titles in it, compared to our baseball team always shitting the bed in Omaha.

There really isn't a 3 sport that people watch in a collegiate setting.

It's 2 and then Olympic sports but only in the Olympics.

Hockey is probably slightly above baseball but that's regional.

Women's basketball is aired from Bristol so it's on. Stuff is on...It could be Sumo... Vacuuming needs to get done.

But if ESPN showed Aussie Rules like back in the day that would be the #3...Not a college sport but somewhat a CFB minor league.

Minor college sports just don't draw especially if they aren't on TV.

But Bristol invests in UConn and they put the product on like I love Lucy.

Espn is in Connecticut. There's bias for the sport, as far as coverage is concerned, because of this.

Really nice point

Sure it is. It's on TV.

What would be 3rd other than women's basketball?

Women's volleyball is more popular than women's basketball. Feels like it's been that way for a while now.

Consider this: women are half the population. What college sport do you think they watch the most?

Yes, women's basketball is the third most popular college sport.

You're assuming that even they watch it.

Wait, are you suggesting the answer isn't college football?

They do. Maybe not in the trailer park, but in real parts of the country, they do.

The only people that watch it are 80 year old Tennessee fans.

It's a shame that title 9 killed so many of the other men's sports. LSU used to have great wrestling and boxing teams. If you ever look at the LSU hall of fame in the PMAC, half of the guys are boxers.

I use to love watching the NCAA wrestling finals every year. There are only a few colleges that have wrestling teams now though, so it's pretty much just 3 conferences and some smaller schools. I think it's still a club sport at LSU. I'd love for the sport to get a push though.

Btw, here is the video for the 2017 individual finals (LINK ). They held it in St. Louis and there looks to be over 20K people there.

Hell, in 2015-16, only 17 NCAA women's basketball teams claimed to have an average attendance of more than 5k. 11 of those 16 averaged 6.5k or less, which tells me they really had less than 5k.

how's that compared to hockey, baseball. And women's softball though?

That's the question here, and I don't know the answer or car enough to try to find out.

Let's be fair the premise here is that there are only 300 people at an LSU basketball game. I thought that was normal?

About 4 or 5 schools in the SEC pack house for women's basketball. No different than not every college baseball game is attended like LSU

They are all fairly comparable, when you take into account that I believe schools tend to inflate the attendance for their women's teams. They do it for men too, but they do it more for the women.

Iowa held an outdoor meet in their football stadium and drew 42,800 fans. That's outdoors in mid-November in Iowa. That's impressive.

I don't know about how LSU's wrestling was (I have heard of yalls boxing history) but that's a good article about the effects of Title IX on wrestling and men's athletics. The article is about Auburn's wrestling program and how right in the midst of developing a successful and popular program it was taken away by Title IX.
In 1980-81 Auburn wrestling finished #9, the first SEC school to EVER crack the Top 10. They were drawing crowds of 6-7,000 for matches. Auburn hosted #1 Oklahoma that year and beat them in a duel meet. In 1981-82 there was no more wrestling program due to Title IX. By the math based on points out former wrestlers scored at their new schools that season, Auburn would have finished #2 in the NCAA in 81-82. If we continued that sort of success and other SEC schools started taking wrestling more seriously, there's no telling how the sport would have grown in the south. Wrestling could have easily been a #3 sport if it wasn't for Title IX

I realize that the intent of Title IX wasnt to take opportunities from men but to give them to women... but it has taken a lot away from men and it's really a travesty what's happened to a lot of men's sports because of it.

They watch gymnastics/figure skating

I have never met a woman in my 40+ years who has ever watched a female college basketball game in their lives.

Their really isn't a 3rd sport in college athletics. In the south it is clearly baseball but in other places it usually comes down to what sports are the most successful.

Good point, but it also leads into the OP's point.

In the south, it's baseball. In the midwest, it's wrestling. In the upper North or Northeast, it's hockey. In the mid-Atlantic, it's possibly lacrosse. Out west, olympic sports of all kinds are equally ignored (even though many championships are won).

But there is a valid case to be made that women's basketball is the third most popular sport in very few places.
