I know many baseball peeps on this board dismiss a knuckleballer but RA is on fricking fire

8k's today 2 walks

here is the thing- I've watched every game he's pitched this year. I don't believe it myself sometimes but he is CONTROLLING the knuckler....I know, it's not suppose to work that way but the guy has thrown the knuckler for strikes all year long

19 fricking walks in 81 innings is INSANE for a non-knuckler

One he's a legit all-star and if he keeps this going a clear Cy Young leader

Doesn't he have like a 90 mph fastball as well?
He's the guy that was in the minors as a normal pitcher then switched to the knuckleball isn't he?

I haven't watched him pitch this year but have seen his stats, does he ever incorporate other pitches into his arsenal?

From my post on the FSB... His last 24.2 innings pitched...

quote:

24.2 INN, 14H, 3BB, 29K, 0ER.

Incredible! Especially seeing as how a pitch probably hasn't broke 83 on the gun.

The dude is a stand up guy as well! Great for him!

No low 80's

don't know whole story but think it was a injury or something or just wasn't getting it done and went and learned from the Niekro's I think

knuckle, knuckle, knuckle, knuckle, fastball (high/low/inside/outside), knuckle for the strikeout

seriously throws the knuckle atleast 80% of the time if not higher and again, he throws it for strikes consistently....I really don't know how he does it...also has a knuckle that looks great and then shoots so high it's over the batter's head as he's flaying away....

I've got to start watching more baseball, it's so easy to just look at scores/stats of baseball games and get most of the info. It's not like other sports when stats don't tell the whole story, but sometimes not watching you miss stuff like this guy

Could not agree more!!!!

From his Wikipedia page... The success he is having makes me so happy for him!

quote:

Dickey is married and has two daughters.[2] A born-again Christian, he helps operate the Ocala, Florida-based Honoring the Father Ministries which provides medical supplies, powdered milk and baseball equipment to the impoverished in Latin America.[18]

One of his favorite hobbies is reading. He keeps a stack of books in his locker at all times, including a Life of Pi by Yann Martel and a collection of works by C. S. Lewis. If he had not become a professional athlete, he would have wanted to be an English professor.[19] Dickey named his bats for literary swords--Orcrist the Goblin Cleaver (from The Hobbit) and Hrunting (from Beowulf).[20] Dickey mixed up Orcrist and Sting when explaining the origin of the name.[21][22]

In November 2011, Dickey announced that he would risk his 2012 season salary ($4,250,000) to attempt to climb Mount Kilimanjaro; he credits this aspiration to his boyhood reading of Hemingway's The Snows of Kilimanjaro.[23] While climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, he set out to raise awareness of the issue of human trafficking in India. His climb was in support of an organization called "Bombay Teen Challenge" that ministers to victims of human trafficking and their children in the heart of the redlight districts. Dickey returned from this trip in January 2012 with Mets bullpen catcher Dave Racaniello and the Cleveland Indians starting pitcher Kevin Slowey, and together raised over $100,000.

His autobiography, Wherever I Wind Up: My Quest for Truth, Authenticity and the Perfect Knuckleball, written along with New York Daily News reporter Wayne Coffey, was released on March 29, 2012.[24] In the book, Dickey discussed suffering sexual abuse as a child and his struggles with suicidal thoughts as an adult.[25]

It's also tough for teams when their hitters have to face Santana one day then Dickey the next. Such a drastic change in both velocity and pitching style.

I really had a hard time with the roids era....Was not the game I grew up with and kind of lost a little love for the game

but I splurged and got extra innings this year and it's been pure joy frankly.....not watching games you are right, you miss so many things that the boxscore doesn't tell....and while I had issues with some of the people who played the games the last 10-15 years.....the game itself is still the greatest creation known to mankind

I do agree but with Santana being held back occasionally he hasn't followed him every game...like today Hefner went last night with Dickey today and Hefner ain't no Dickey or Santana

Dickey was an absolute stud as a flame-thrower at Tennessee. Drafted in the 1st round by the Rangers.

Scout notices no UCL in a baseball card, has to completely re-invent himself as a pitcher.

15 years later he is a totally different pitcher and dominating, couldn't happen to a better dude.

He was so pedestrian as a Ranger, its great to see guys who can adapt to their own skill set and succeed. Best of luck to him in the future

He's on pace to win 25 games.

9-1 2.44ERA

37 year old knuckleballer RA Dickey for Cy Young?

ETA: Its pretty incredible what he's done with the Mets. Consider that his lowest ERA in a season was 4.62. During his time with the Mets though (before today) he's gone 27-23 with an ERA of 3.02. So after today, his ERA with the Mets is below 3!

Boy that brings back memories. I remember how he was so highly regarded as was his Tennessee team that came into the Box in the mid to late 90's. Don't know if this has happened before but he was actually credited with all 3 loses in one weekend series against the tigers

I figured I'd change this up since the guy is going to do this all season long it seems

I sound like a broken record- He was basically un-hittable last night- AGAIN

yeah back to back one hitters vs two of the best teams in baseball, the Rays and the O's

the one hit he gave up was a solid line drive off a inside hard knuckler (lefthanded batter)- It was the only hard hit ball all night

I've never seen anything like this in my 44 years. Pitchers have been dominate before but this is unreal
