I'd be okay Kemp for Olivera straight up. Can't imagine Padres would do that though

Source describes Kemp from #Padres to #Braves for Olivera as "getting closer." Says would just be those 2 in deal

This maybe very similar to the Chris Johnson deal for us.

Yep, if it's Kemp and cash for Olivera straight up I think this makes a ton of sense for us.

So for the past year and a half they've traded away everything they could in order to build up prospects and the farm system. Now all of sudden they want to trade prospects for Kemp and McCann, two players past their prime. What am I missing here?

We're moving into a new baseball stadium at the beginning of next season, we will be making a number of moves this offseason (or now) that won't truly make sense for a rebuilding team simply because the front office will be trying to make some moves to pretend like we are going to be able to compete next year so they can sell tickets.

It sucks, but pretty much going to happen.

Olivera is trash and so is Kemp. If money is close I guess I would rather have Kemp. If no money is swapped this is a bad trade.

Difference is Olivera is unlikely to ever see the field for us ever again after the suspension. Kemp at least has a chance to provide something. I'd rather pay 6-8 mil a year through 2019 to Kemp and have a chance for him to do something than pay Olivera 6 mil a year through 2020 to either be in the minor or be cut.

Sounds like Padres sending Braves cash and DFAing Olivera.

Olivera for Kemp is indeed a one-for-one. #Padres would be sending $ to #Braves. Only last-sec medical would kill deal now.

Braves should have just DFA'd Olivera. Kemp is absolute garbage and we will be paying him more than we owed Olivera.

As long as both clear their physicals, the deal is done.

So let's look at what we gave up for Olivera and it's basically that for Kemp

I'm very "meh" on this. Glad we get rid of Olivera I guess but Kemp really isn't good anymore. At least we're not giving up any prospects I guess.

I honestly don't care one way or the other. I guess Kemp will probably end up contributing more than Olivera would have.

I'll wait to see when the money specifics come out.

The Olivera trade was horrible when made because we gave away Alex Wood, who would have been able to get prospects in a trade for. Gave away Peraza and we got a player on a long term contract at 31. Olivera had no major league experience when we made this trade.

Peraza isn't a MLB player and Wood had all of the signs of decline ahead. Drop in velo was a real issue. However, your point stands with how the market is for pitchers right now.

Kemp is positive WAR player despite playing in a park where he's a huge defensive liability. Probably the second best bat in our lineup right now.

Ranks 3rd in wRC+ behind Freeman and Flowers.

Shows how bad we are.

Hopefully he has a good 2 months (and remembers how to walk) and we can flip him to an AL team.

Yeah. It's good to get anything from that Olivera money at this point. I wouldn't mind hanging on to him next year depending on his value this winter. Certainly not part of our long term plans though
