The Arrieta PED speculation, pathetic jealousy or justified?

If he had ballooned up like Clemens, Bonds, A-Rod, Sosa, Manny, Palmero, etc. I could see it, but the dude is just lean and has always been that way. My guess is extreme envy. It's not like this is a hitter that had a decent average with no pop all of a sudden hitting 30-40 home runs. Hell, it's not even a pitcher that topped out at 90 on his fastball suddenly hurling 96 for 9 innings. Literally the only change in his play was being a cut-fastball pitcher that mastered the control on his breaking pitches. Pretty bullshite that instead of people rewarding your hard work, they want to accuse you of cheating instead. Like a pitcher is going to benefit THAT much from PEDs in the first place. There's so much finesse and technique involved that pure physical strength wouldn't transform a pitcher like that anyway.

Zach Britton explained it perfectly the other day. Their old pitching coach wouldnt let him throw his cutter.

There's no way of knowing. With some of the guys who get popped, there are no obvious visual effects. PED's do more than get you jacked.

No, but your focus is off the charts, so it helps.

I just can't see how steroids would allow you to improve your pitching? Maybe it would give you endurance, but how can it help you command your pitches? But in today's game, you can't put it fast NO ONE.

quote:Exactly. Clemens started using when he was getting older and losing his zip. That I can see, but when you're Arrieta's age? Literally no point.

You have more energy, more endurance, more focus, and more strength. Add that all together and it definitely helps. Just like Bonds for example. His bat speed and focus/concentration definitely allowed him to make better contact and his new strength allowed him to go yard more often. Similar results for pitching.

Whenever a player does what he's done after being mediocre before people will ask questions. Anyone who follows it closely can see what he did though. He always had the stuff/potential

Are the accusations coming from fellow players?

Someone should probably be pointing the finger at Baltimore's organization for failing to properly develop, and stunting the growth of a pitcher the caliber of Arrieta.
The PED talk is low-hanging fruit for the media to jump on.

Endurance and increased muscle recovery helps in the weight room, helping with velocity/snap on breaking pitches.
Endurance also allows you to better repeat your mechanics, which leads to increased command and velocity.
Not going to speculate on whether Arrieta is actually taking steroids, don't really care either way. Wouldn't change my opinion of him or what he's accomplishing.

not to mention his velocity was down in the playoffs. But yea, he has superhuman longevity

And I'm not saying he's on roids, but I wouldn't be shocked if he were. Either way, I like him

This is much more likely than steroids, IMO. Baseball requires such fine tuned skill that sometimes small adjustments can drastically change player performance out of nowhere... Jose Bautista and Cliff Lee, off the top of my head.
