Los Angeles as a whole is well-represented.

Pujols has said that he'll retire when he can no longer compete. So he won't be sitting on the bench like Wells did.

disagree. It's a one year deal and he's coming off a solid year. It's pretty much market value.

It's July 1, so that means Bobby Bonilla got a check for $1,193,248.20 today, just as he will every July 1 through 2035. That's due to a deferral clause from when the Mets bought out the final year of Bonilla's contract before the 2000 season.

Holy. shite.

The New York Mets placed Bonilla on unconditional waivers in 2000. He spent the 2000 season playing for the Atlanta Braves. The Mets agreed to pay out the remainder of Bonilla's contract by deferring the $5.9 million that he was due. The Mets will pay him 25 equal payments of $1,193,248.20 every July 1 from 2011 until 2035, assuming an annual interest rate of 8% during the period 2001–2035.[8] In addition to this 25 payments of $500,000 from the Mets started in 2004. Bringing his one contract year of 2000 total earnings to $42,250,000. This makes Bobby the highest paid player of all time.

How is this even possible... whoever agreed to this contract on the Mets side should be shot on site

Reminds me a lot of that TV deal that those old ABA guys have because of some language in the original contract with the NBA-ABA merger LINK

"Cubs not on the list

YAY!!"

That's why I was checking the thread. Three years ago that most definitely would not have been the case with Zambrano, Soriano, etc. The cupboard has been cleaned. Now it's time to rebuild.

A-Gon had 100rbi last year. I expect similar with Puig hitting ahead of him all year. BJ upton contract is AWFUL. Being a braves fan, his deal is nauseating.

Bobby Bonilla's contract of deferred payments from the New York Mets is considered a laughing stock amongst baseball fans as the Mets chose to give Bonilla 25 payments totaling $29.8 million (starting in 2011) instead of the $5.9 million they owed him in 2000.

But to criticize the deal is to not understand that Bonilla gained nothing and the Mets actually came out ahead in the deal.

If Bonilla had accepted the $5.9 million in 2000 and invested the entire amount at 8% interest, the original investment would have grown to $104.1 million by 2035* (blue line in chart below). If instead, Bonilla takes his annual payment and invests that with an 8% annual return, he would have $95.2 million by 2035 (orange line in chart below).

In other words, Bonilla lost nearly $10 million by taking the payments instead of the lump sum.

But more importantly to the Mets, if they invested the $5.9 million at 8% interest in 2000. That money would have grown to more than $14 million before they had to make a single payment. And that money would continue to draw interest even while they are making payments.

By 2035, the Mets would still have $8.9 million left over (red line in chart below).

In other words, if invested at a standard rate, the Mets would have actually profited from Bonilla's generosity and the contract wasn't so dumb after all...

I agree 100% with this. I never understand what is going through team management's minds during these lucrative 10 year contracts...the dude will be over 40 by the time its done, WTF?

I m a big Cards fan bu don't give them too much credit with Pujols. They would have paid him $200M (I think). They just lucked out when somebody else gave him $240M.
