Wasn't the purpose of the 30 for 30 series to spotlight stories in sports that aren't as well known? Who doesn't know about the Celtics/Lakers?

I don't know if that was the specific vision of the series.
Everyone knew about OJ Simpson and that was still a fantastic series.

I think you're right. Those just happened to be some of the most popular.
Season 1 had stories about
Gretzky being traded
Len Bias
Jimmy the Greek
The U
Reggie Miller
Ricky Williams
etc
Most sports fans knew about those stories.

We're getting far away from the Magic-Bird era. We'll be at a point soon that no one under 40 will really have any appreciation for the historical significance of the rivalry.

I probably wouldn't watch it if it was only obscure sports stories. Some of my favorites are the well known ones like The U, Fab Five, etc...
