The Shawn Watson era of offensive football at Texas is over after just 14 games.

Watson, Texas' assistant head coach for offense, will no longer serve as Texas’ main play caller. Charlie Strong, who made the announcement, said wide receivers coach Jay Norvell will be sole play-caller. Watson will be the quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator Joe Wickline will focus on coaching the offensive line.

After a debut season where Texas finished near the bottom of the FBS in virtually every major offensive category, Watson’s unit struggled in its season opener against Notre Dame. In the 38-3 defeat, the Longhorns did not show the offensive change the staff had promised all offseason.

What Strong wanted and what Watson produced seemed to be in stark contrast to one another.

“I was hoping I'd see a big difference myself,” said Strong on Monday about the offense.

WTF did he see at camp. All this tells me is the offense must have looked good against the defense, so what's that say about the defense?

He was the Co-OC and WR Coach and was a great recruiter but a pretty bad coach

This doesn't surprise me at all. Our offense never reached it's potential even with Bridgewater under Watson. Strong would be a better fit at Miami with his connections down there in the state

Yeah. Heupel landed at Utah State which, although a significant step down, may give him a lot more job security.

ETA - Although, judging by their first game, maybe not.
