The NCAA on Friday banned programs from hosting satellite camps, and a big hoopla will be made about Jim Harbaugh and Michigan vs. the SEC and how college football's most powerful conference once again got its way. But it sucks for high school recruits more than anyone.

rograms set up satellite camps with their own interests at heart. Why else would Jim Harbaugh pick IMG Academy, with its 10 top-200 recruits in the class of 2017, as its location for Michigan's Florida practices? But what the NCAA's dismissal of this recruiting tactic does is limit exposure for recruits who can't afford to travel all over the country. There are few who can.

quote:

Schools have money. They can afford to travel and host these camps. Players can't. And sure, a top-300 recruit in today's world gets more exposure than he needs. But a two- or three-star safety from Miami who gets little interest from local Division I schools, for whatever reason, could maybe get a look from a program that would otherwise have never seen him. It was an opportunity for players to generate more interest in themselves, but instead, a few programs looking to maintain their already fertile recruiting bases have won out.

From former Oklahoma State DE Victor Irokansi:

I remember as a recruit satellite camps were a blessing for us with limited means

Nebraska cornerback Dicaprio Bootle, who is from Miami and received his offer from the Cornhuskers at a south Florida camp:

Without the satellite camps I might not be headed in the direction that I am right now...#GBR ??????

Pat Fitzgerald also upset:

Disappointed to read satellite camp news-better solutions than a ban- will hurt PSA's & Group of 5 schools.

Michigan looks like a big loser in this, as it won't be able to spread its reach quite as far. But who knows how much of an effect satellite camps have had on big programs anyway. The SEC wasn't going to lose the south because a few northern programs came down once a year, and Michigan's entire recruiting base wasn't suddenly going to be Florida.

What we do know is that satellite camps helped players. So of course the NCAA banned them, and it is wrong for doing so.

congrats southerners, you guys don't think football players of limited means and non-4/5 star talent should get exposute

I've said it before. Just let kids make official visits in their junior and sophomore years too. That gives a kid from Florida a chance to see what Michigan or Indiana are like and gives a Midwestern kid a chance to look at Troy and Rice if he won't be getting a look from OSU or Bama

It's 2016, we have more information in our pockets than previous generations could ever imagine in their wildest dreams. If you're good, you'll get found. If harbaugh is interested in some dirt poor kid from the backwoods south, he'll fly down there on a recruiting visit. If they want that kid to see what UM is about, they'll fly him up for an official. These days everyone who is even moderately good has probably every HS snap they've ever played cataloged digitally somewhere.

To think that a school located in ann arbor not being able to have practice in florida is "hurting players" is flat out ridiculous.

because clearly Michigan's intention was too provide these services to disadvantaged players. right?

Oh boohoo. Harbaugh did not care one bit about those lesser recruits and nor did his satellite "camps" help those guys. He found a loophole and exploited it as much as he could.

Recruiting websites and shoe companies still hold camps that get these kids enough exposure. Amongst all the video and other info coaches have at their advantage.

Awful idea with coaching staff turnover.

Pretty bullshite by the NCAA. Just goes to show how they don't really look out for the welfare of prospective student-athletes.

If it was the big bad SEC, then why was the vote 4-1 with only the big 10 voting in favor? Why single out the SEC? Why aren't you on here bitching about the other conferences who voted against satellite camps?

I do agree with this actually. I know UW has a few guys from their recent classes that were discovered at these satellite camps that were sleepers and would have ended up at smaller colleges.

That being said, a big to Michigan and Harbaugh for pushing the boundaries and forcing the NCAA's hand in this. They're the ones we should be pissed at.

For those supporting this ban and laughing at Harbaugh...why?

Why do you think it's bad for schools to have satellite camps wherever they want? If the school is willing to pay for it, who cares?

this reeks of the NCAA caving to Saban and a bunch of crybabies pissed off that they didn't think of it first.

The SEC isn't famous for "broadening the horizons" of those that fill its coffers.

How exactly does this hurt players? Are colleges suddenly getting fewer scholarships? Last I checked, they still get 85. Am I wrong? If you want to find these hidden gems, get better at scouting.

it's not about getting found, it's about being able to experience what that program has to offer without being a super recruit who gets invited on an official visit.

And by that time, why would you even take a visit if you've never been previously exposed...

It's 2016 and we have the internet. You can get exposed to any program you want. Also, you don't have to be a super recruit to get an invite for an official visit.

Why do they need to do that? Harbaugh has made it clear how miserable Michigan is by spending as much time as he possibly can in SEC country.
