South Texas Showdown now a conference rivalry - UTRGV moving to Southland

Texas-Rio Grande Valley leaving the WAC to join the Southland for the start of 2024-25
UTRGV will have to pay the WAC $2 million to make the move
Most notably... the Vaqueros are starting a football program for the 2025 season... the school recently took over an entertainment complex there in Edinburg which included a 10,000 seat stadium that was now tenant-less after the United Soccer League team that called it home folded up shop
Immediately adds another significant rivalry to the Southland as UTRGV & Texas A&M - Corpus Christi already schedule each other in pretty much every sport and dub it the South Texas Showdown
Just means the Louisiana schools like Southeastern, UNO, & NSU better plan funding accordingly for another annual flight for conference games... that ain't a bus trip

I think the Southland will split soon into a Texas and a Louisiana conference… maybe even merge with the SWAC

Southland trying to recoup some of its losses to the WAC... already got Lamar back from the WAC after like 1 year... but still lost SFA, Abilene Christian, Sam Houston (now CUSA)
Also lost Central Arkansas to the ASUN at the same time
