https://markbradley.blog.ajc.com/2015/04/27/simmons-slides-late-and-the-already-cranky-nats-get-miffed/
quote:

Andrelton Simmons’ fifth-inning sliding kick — or kicking slide, depending on your perspective — that dislodged the ball from third baseman Yunel Escobar’s glove and removed several hunks of skin from the former Brave’s left hand left the Nats in a snit. Never mind that they lost 8-4 to the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field to fall to 7-13 and eight games out of first place. Never mind that they made four errors. The team projected by many as baseball’s best sat in its clubhouse Monday night filled with what the Nats deemed righteous indignation.

Said Bryce Harper: “Andrelton plays with a lot of energy, but that was a B.S. play. That slide was definitely uncalled for.”

Said Ian Desmond: “He really didn’t slide at all. It was a pretty ugly slide. You’ve got to be way smarter than that. There’s a right way to play the game, and that’s not the right way.”

quote:

Simmons would say afterward that he expected to be plunked on his next at-bat, and sure enough … Rafael Martin hit Simmons with a pitch as the shortstop led off the seventh, prompting the Braves’ Jonny Gomes — who wasn’t even playing — to be ejected for stepping onto the field in protest. (Freddie Freeman had been tossed earlier for disputing a checked-swing strikeout. It was that sort of night.)

Said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez of the play in question: “It was a late slide. I was worried about Simmons getting hurt. But there was nothing malicious about it.”

Later Desmond would break up a double play by taking out Jace Peterson. Williams saw that as an example of his team playing, to borrow Desmond’s phrase, the right way. “The slide into second base by Dezzie is clean,” Williams said.

Nationals are a bunch of whiny, baby back bitches.

I don't think I've ever seen such a pathetic display of baseball as I saw from the Nats last night.

The errors, the body language, the whining. My god they took such great offense to that slide they were willing to ensure they lost the game just to "send a message" to Simmons lol.

Seriously, that team is a dumpster fire right now

I'm not sure why, but I really don't like the Nats. Never liked Matt Williams for some reason and Harper seems like a huge douche

Watched the Nationals for the first time this season last night. They looked horrible. Those two throwing errors from the P to 1B...wtf?

They had to put Ryan Zimmerman at a position where he didn't have to move too much due to his foot problems (precluding the outfield) and his mental block about throwing to 1st base (precluding any infield position except 1st base).

So the only positions left to him were C, P, or 1B.

Ergo, a non-career 1B is now playing 1B for the Nationals.

No mention of Sherzer crying like a little bitch about batting?

Bumgarner put him in his fricking place.

That dude is hard as nails. Love that guy.

No he slid late. It's one of those unwritten rules you guys love to trumpet when the other team does it.

I'm not condoning the nats whining, it's just really odd seeing braves fans griping about it.

The Nats must be a dumpster fire if Yunel Escobar is on their roster. The primo doña duo with him and Harper is something to behold.

Rondon is hurt. Escobar is playing pretty well. I only know the complaints from fans of other teams he's played for that he's a real pain in the arse, but ultimately if you can swing a bat, you're going to have a job.

Harper is certainly polarizing with some claiming as you do while others defend him. Ultimately he's 22 years old, a future super star and probably falls somewhere in the middle between haters and fanboys impressions of him.

That is a very fair point.

I can't say I'm a fan, but can't say I'm not either.

If anything questionable happens tonight I expect Harper to get beaned, especially when you consider that Teheran and Bryce have a bit of history.

Weird. What you say might be true, but I've never heard it.

I've always thought that as long as you are able to stop on the bag, a slide is a slide as long as its not spikes-up (and Simmons' weren't).
