Given his relative success in his first two NFL starts which have somewhat quieted his critics, I have a question for those who thought that he would suck, etc in the NFL:

If Newton had never left Florida, went on to start there for two years to go along with winning the BCS championship and Heisman last year, would you have been as vocal in declaring your opinions that he would suck? Would you still have questioned his mental makeup?

yup

i was as vocal for newton as i was for tebow, for similar reasons (i thought newton had a better shot though)

If a criminal didn't commit the crime, would he still then be a criminal?

I questioned if Newton would translate just simply because of the offense he played in at Auburn.

I have doubts about any QB coming from a spread system. Some guys can adjust some guys can't.

Edit: So yes if he stayed at Florida in Urbans gimmick spread option deal I would have questioned if he would translate well to the NFL.

i always liked Newton. i was shocked when Saints fans were giggling "hehe i hope the Panthers take Newton".

Like i said then, if he pans out , we are in trouble.

if they take someone else and that player pans out(Dareus, Peterson, AJ Green...whomever) it wont be nearly as bad news for the Saints than if Newton became great.

Still dont understand why they wanted them to draft him.

AS far as this question, I'd probably look at him the same. I actualy give him more props for taking Auburn to new heights with average talent around him all around.

Cam is quickly proving to be the finest example of my hair-brained theory that coaching, systems, etc. matter a whole lot less than talent + dedication.

How would staying at Florida under Urban have helped the perception of his transition to the NFL?

Sure didn't help Tebow. Maybe people would have liked Cam more if he didn't appear like a mercenary but liking someone doesn't mean you think they can make a good NFL QB...ala Tebow.

And lets not get carried away. VY had a pretty good rookie start. His running won't matter but it sure gets everyone all crazy in their mind.

Can he consistently pass for 400 yards and not throw picks...if yes, then he'll be a success.

Can you imagine how awesome Florida would have been after Tebow left if Newton stayed? Holy shite.

VY has never thrown for 400 yards in a single game in his entire career.

Passing wise, his best game was 24/35, 249 yards, and 2 TDs.

A good game, to be sure, but not exactly take over the game through the air, quality.

And that's not really getting into his mechanical issues, which Newton doesn't really have.

Plus, VY went to a team with a decent defense and a running game...

Newton doesn't have that right now.

I didn't see him being an NFL type of passer in college, but in 2 games he's shown me different. However, unlike some people I can still be objective and say he's a good QB even though I don't like him.

Still way too early to call Cam a success, I want to see how he fares once league DCs make their adjustments to him. He's put up big #s but still has a low completion % and tons of ints.

And for the race baiting, tebow faced just as many questions about his intelligence as Cam did. I still question Cam's intelligence and overall ability to lead a team. We'll see.

Yeah, Vince started in a better situation (even with the discord over the Norm Chow offense). His surrounding talent was a lot better.

Plus, Vince, for better or worse, just always struck me as a guy who said, "I'm gonna play my way and make it work." Which worked in college, and at times in the league.

Cam has totally embraced the idea that he needs to get stronger in the pocket/reading defenses/going through progressions.

I liked Cam. I didn't think he would be throwing for over 400 yards a game after two starts, but he reminded me of Steve McNair. Last year I said that for one year he was the best college QB I had ever seen.

It's only been 2 weeks but looks like he could end up being better than McNair, who was elite in his prime.

i thought he had potential to be great if he sat and got a complete breakdown (physically and mentally)

i was def wrong about that

Because people would have given Cam much less credit for taking a team like Florida to a national championship. And then the comparisons to Tebow would have just grown even more. There would have so many more critics saying, "Oh look another high profile QB having success in Florida" First Tebow, now Cam...

He took a losing team without any where near the talent of UF to an undefeated season in his one and only year. He carried that team on his back.

But Tebow played college football for free, unlike Cam Newton who got paid to play college football

Would newton have turned white in Florida? People questioned him because he's a black qb. Plain and simple

<-----------

Let me know when he starts winning games. Nobody remembers 400 yard games of losing qb's despite all the damn hype that surrounds them.

Until then, Cammy Cam =
